DLM Banding on the line
« on: December 01, 2022, 06:08:36 PM »

There is very high spike of error second and crc error on the line (blaming neighbour xmas lights)

Is that my line banded? As the line is banded just after 1pm today.

Connection speed (kbps):   74000          20000

I would say that this is a fairly good indication that your line is banded, as well as your high SNR margin.

That's pretty stupid to banded the line after good stable connection for over 4 months.  Will raised to isp to get the dlm resetted

What made you notice it Max as I thought you'd stopped looking at the stats?  :-\

You may also find your ISP reluctant to perform a DLM reset as that will cost them money and the speed reduction is pretty small.

The ISP cannot performed DLM resetted. Told me that DLM will do it own way but the banded might never recovered.

I've lost a good 10Mbps on my Sky connection. I'm not even sure I can be bothered to fix it now - tempted to cancel it and drop just the single FTTC + use 4G until 2023.

That worse than mine, as I lost 6Mbps

You can prove if it is or isn't banded by rebooting the router. If it connects again at exactly 74000 then it is banded. Unfortunately unless your speed falls below what your ISP guaranteed you when you took out the contract they are unlikely to want to pay for a DLM reset as your line is working to what you contracted for.

Hah, yes my Sky "Superfast Guarantee" speed is 36Mbps, and it's banded at 40000.

The OR downstream handback threshold is 48Mbps however.

Honestly, I can't be bothered at this point. I'd rather bin it and the landline and save £47.50 a month.

They're a business, I don't see how like/dislike is particularly relevant.  I will go with whoever provides the best service and is not too expensive.

While I really want to move to CityFibre for symmetrical, I strongly suspect Openreach are a more robust network.  Also less prone to failure as their active equipment is back in a protected environment (an exchange) hopefully with a generator back-up, vs alt-nets that are using cabinets out in the elements, at risk of vandalism and car crashes and with at best a few hours battery backup.

I'd trust Openreach to fix a fault a lot quicker than anyone else, despite the problems I've had myself with them.
Line got disconnected from the cabinet due an engineer mistake and they left me all weekend without service.
Tags got stuck on the database when I tried to move back to Openreach service from Digital Region.

No business is flawless and if you're stuck on grotty old copper service subject to neighbours turning on their christmas lights knocking out your broadband, there's not a lot you can do.  That is not a problem Openreach can fix, banding is the only solution to keep a service working when there is a problem which may be well outside of their control, its them doing their job by prioritising keeping you online.
