Your EE Smart Router has a WAN port so you should able to connect that to the Zyxel and then see if you can configure the Google Nest as @RealAleMadrid has suggested.

I remember that comment, but I'm now committed !  ;)

The google set up page during the setting consists of a space fir username, one for password and another to verify the password.

My next attempt will be to fully reset the Nest Router and turn it off then turn it back on when connected to the Zyxel when that is already connected to the broadband.

I don't think that will get you anywhere. The Zyxel is connected to the G.Fast service but until PPPoE credentials are supplied it is not yet connected to the Internet via EE. You haven't said where you are entering the username and password details, please explain where this Google set up page is to be found.

You configure the Nest via the Google Home app.

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6246630?hl=en-GB

It would presumably need to be online to do this.

Edit: actually it needs to be offline

How do I edit WAN settings?
Note: To edit your WAN settings, Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi must be offline and your mobile phone must be connected to your Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi network. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from your router or primary Wifi point and wait until the light pulses yellow (Google Nest Wifi) or pulses orange (Google Wifi). Make sure that your mobile device is still connected to your Nest Wifi or Google Wifi network.

Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
Tap Wi-Fi  and then Settings  and then Advanced networking.
Tap WAN.
Choose DHCP, Static or PPPoE.
Make any changes, then tap Save .

I have tried to.
The credentials are entered into the Google home app during setting up the router. You cannot simply access this page at will.

It isn't possible to access that section until after it is setup, you cannot edit settings that have refused to be saved.
You do access that section during the set up but until this point I have been unsuccessful in making it complete as it has always complained of "no internet connection".

The post from @John may help you. I would not want to rely on anything that needs a mobile phone app to set it up. it is making things much more complicated than they need to be.

It would seem from your latest post the whole set up process is a flawed Catch22 situation, you are trying to set up an internet connection but it fails because you have no internet connection.

I've had a thought.
Perhaps I can access the Nest Router while it's set up with my EE Smart Hub and input the PPPOE credentials.
Then turn it off and swap it out for the Zyxel.
Any chance that will work?

I have a very vague, sort-of, memory of someone being in the same situation -- possibly posted in the Thinkbroadband Forum -- and the solution was to temporarily have:

The modem bridge <--> the EWAN port of the ISP supplied modem/router <--> the Google Nest Router.

That allowed the Google Nest Router to be connected to the Internet and successfully configured. Then the ISP supplied modem/router was removed leaving the desired configuration:

The modem bridge <--> the Google Nest Router.

Is that similar to what I'm suggesting now? Change the settings on the Google Router whilst it is setup with a working system, then change the modem and turn it all back on...?

Here are the setting pages for the Google Router.

Yes, that sort-of matches my sort-of, vague, memory.  :)

The Google Nest Router is currently operating in DNCP (client) mode on it's EWAN port and you need to change it to PPPoE (client) mode. Ideally you would perform the configuration via a computer connected to a LAN port of the Nest Router. (Does it have such a port?)

Yes, it has one WAN port and one LAN port. But there is no gui that is accessible from a PC that I have found.
I did call google support and they had me access a script on the router using the ip address of the router prior to it being set up. So it might be possible to access this again, and possibly edit it and save a new set up. 🤷‍♂️

That script was located at http://192.168.84.1/api/v1/status
The 192.168.84.1 is the ip address of the router prior to being set up. It changes to 192.168.86.1 once set up.

This is the script which now resides at http://192.168.86.1/api/v1/status

I wouldn't know how to edit it and save it to the router. Something tells me it's not possible via that web page.

I'm just adding bits to this thread as I find them.
I have seen that this issue might be due to lack of VLAN ID tagging. So I might try adding this to the Zyxel settings for one of the LAN ports.
