Modem Only, for FTTC. Recommendations?
« on: May 28, 2021, 03:09:23 PM »

[Moderator note: This post and all that follow have been split off N0_Klu3's "Best Modem only for FTTC" topic.]

What is the Zyxel VMG4005-B50A like

I'm having problems finding a modem to buy that's good on vdsl2

The above or a draytek 166, even that's on back order in most shops
or any on the list, or a good one that's available now
Or any that has stats and good up and down

Zyxel VMG4005-B50A

BILLION 800NL R2 Wireless

DrayTek Vigor 2865AC Multi-WAN

DrayTek Vigor 166 modem

I don't think the vigor 2865ac has g.fast, not sure if that at my cab but it maybe some time

Can't comment on VMG4005-B50A as I never used it.

I can tell you (and you can find tons of information on this forum) that the VMG1312-B10A & VMG8x24-B10A perform very well (the former slightly better on my line).

I'm now using a Vigor 166 on G.fast and it's been rock solid, but if you want stats then forget it (go for one with a Broadcom chipset instead). One thing to add about the Vigor 166 is that there are a few users on this forum that have had poor experience with this modem, but I recall they were on VDSL and not G.fast...

The VMG4005-B50A is described as a "VDSL2 17a Bonding and 35b Single Line Bridge" so I'm not entirely sure it's what you want.

Sounds ideal for bonded FTTC/VDSL, and you would expect a provider like Warwicknet to use them, but they actually use two VMG3925 in bridge mode instead: https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=21255.0

Tubaman I'm looking into bonding at some point but when listing that one I may have overlooked that
I was rushing to find one that was in stock
I could not find any VMG1312-B10A & VMG8x24-B10A in shops ATM

I did find a yxel VMG4005-B50A but again out of stock

Okay I rushed a order for a vigor 166
atm  I'm not on g.fast as its not on the cab, but we may move soon so hope that or fttp  :fingers:

Its so hard to find a recommended modem or modem/router as all the faster shops are out of stock

Yes I did want full line stats, so hoping I firmware upgraded will do this (or is it the hardware)

Is CLI/ssh any good for stats on the 166?

hushcoden can you confirm the 166 has a firewall, if so can I put it in a LAN port on a router or do I use the wan

I'll post the sync and u/d speeds vs a tplink as soon as pos, hope its a v2

Nope, at least with the current/latest firmware...

Yes, you can configure it either in bridge mode or in router mode, and with the latter you can then configure the firewall.

Would you recommend using the 166 firewall or the tplinks vr2100
Has the 166 any QoS

If i use the 166 in default modem mode i guess its wan port on the router
My router is 192.168.1.1 would this be a problem or shall i move it

I guess i could use the 166 dhcp and turn off the routers

Thanks for the info btw  :)

Just found this for the vigor 166, it may work

if you open the web console (middle button on the top right next to the floppy disk symbol) and type vdsl status it will tell you the path mode and interleave.

Type ? for command help
> vdsl stats

Okay thanks

I'll be interested on the 166 DSL vs the tplink as all the tplinks I've used have had a lower up than others
Trying it today and the 2019 faceplate vs the older modem on top one

I've been talking to draytek and told them to look at the clock problem and stats
so let's hope they push new fw out soon

I did open a ticket with Draytek two months ago and they said with the next release they would fix the lack of stats (or more precisely it just displays a '0') and the fact that in bridge mode you can't adjust the clock, still awaiting !

v130 gives me an uplift in ds sync by about 6mb on my eci cab. I am also using snr DS offset (ds set at 5db) with no issues to achieve this.

Just mention the serving telephony exchange and the associated PCP (primary cross-connection point) number . . . I'm sure one of us will be able to look it up.  ;)

I have used/am using both the HG612 and the ZyXEL VMG8324-B10A as a modem only on various ISP's over the years and they are both pretty good imho.

Ive rounded it up to Zyxel VMG4005B50A (broadcom), Draytek, and Fritz!box 7530 (intel) as there's seems to be problems with shortages in the uk

What do you think
