Great news that it's now working. :yay:
With respect to the firmware I'd say you are fine leaving it with the custom version. For bridge mode you'll need to change the setting on the Zyxel as you say and then setup the IPOE details in your TP-Link device. There's an article here https://kitz.co.uk/routers/zyxel_VMG8324-B10A_bridge.htm. Adjust step 4 for IPOE instead of PPPoE.
You will need to change the IP of one device to access both GUIs as you have found.

The jumbo frames patch will have zero impact on the performance if you don't need it.

Ok I have had a look but on the tp-link the options I have are static, dynamic, pppoe, l2tp or pptp, sorry I do try to look before I bombard you with questions feel well out of my depth.

Edit

I have left it on dynamic and switched the zyxel to bridge and it seams to be working? Only thing now is I can't access the zyxel GUI

Ok re read I need to connect 2 Lan cables am I right?

Recap questions: Is the OP now using Johnson firmware? Does even TalkTalk ADSL use IPoE not PPP ? And TT VDSL2 too?

Very glad it worked in the end.   ;D

The former uses PPPoA (with either null strings (or anything) in the two fields for the credentials). The latter uses IPoE.

Also remind me, if you all would be so kind: Did the OP say (s)he is on ADSL ?

And sincere apologies for drifting off topic and hijacking this thread with the following. Could perhaps split this off into a new thread?

And what is the commonest protocol stack for VDSL2 / FTTC ? With BT/OR ? My guess: IP over PPP over PPPoE over ethernet incl VLAN (over x or nothing?) over PTM over VDSL2. (Apologies for revisiting this topic, for the nth time; I looked at this old post that I wrote but haven’t found all the answers yet.)

If I got any of that right, is it the case then that BT/OR’s various boxes don’t necessarily care about PPP being present or absent because a CPE always speaks ethernet, so the system can rely on that being always being present, and the system terminates an upstream link from some CPE using ethernet at some destination MAC address belonging to a BRAS or similar box? So some middle boxes don’t care whether PPP is being used or not? So is it fair to say that Ethernet is being used as a L2-like (ie link-layer) replacement for the true L2 that is PPP?

I saw a picture of a router’s UI with a config field that mentioned an interface’s optional MAC address definition "for spoofing", meaning I take it that some horrid ISP is trying to lock the service to one particular box, and never mind the hell for the sysadmin that comes with saved config info and equipment swap-outs.

No, it is a VDSL2 (ITU-T G.993.2, FTTC) based circuit.
