oh - and of course your latency should give a clue

a non-interleaved line should look something like this

Code: [Select]

C:\Program Files\Support Tools>tracert bbc.co.uk

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.131]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    39 ms   100 ms    99 ms  192.168.1.254
  2     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  3     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  4    15 ms    17 ms    15 ms  83.245.126.93
  5    16 ms    16 ms    16 ms  212.58.238.129
  6    16 ms    15 ms    15 ms  rdirwww-vip.thdo.bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.131]

Trace complete.

Just thought I'd add my 2p worth for comparison :)

A non-interleaved line (from the neighbouring exchange to Kitz, so practically the same distance) should look something like this - note the increase in latency.

Both these are from exchanges near Blackpool, using the same model router

Code: [Select]
C:\>tracert bbc.co.uk

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.131]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    37 ms    99 ms    99 ms  router.ch.lan [192.168.1.254]
  2     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  3     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  4    28 ms    26 ms    23 ms  83.245.126.93
  5    24 ms    24 ms    23 ms  212.58.238.129
  6    24 ms    22 ms    22 ms  rdirwww-vip.thdo.bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.131]

Trace complete.

I think chris meant to say his line is interleaved - hence the additional latency

Thats nice ping though for an interleaved line, chris.

Also:

1: How can i setup a DMZ on the Be*Box?.

2: Whats the command to get the specific connection information e.g.:

Subnet Mask
DHCP
Default Gateway
DNS Server
And
Domain Name Servers

I can get it via the command prompt, but can't remember the command.

And the Be* Username and Pass for my connection? so if i wanted to, use a different router/modem. Is that the same as when ya sign up?

Thanks!

On a 2nd note, why is there now 50 mile extra difference?

It's all to do with where Speedtest.net *thinks* your ISP is located. Be's location must be registered 50 miles further away from Maidenhead than Enta. Nothing more.

I don't think the location is much use in the UK as most ADSL terminates in, or at least traffic gets routed through, London.

Maybe I'm not giving enough credit to it, as it may use the location of the last pingable hop on a reverse traceroute. Dunno tho!

Just for further comparison

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.131]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    25 ms    99 ms    99 ms  192.168.1.254
  2     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  3    10 ms    11 ms    11 ms  195.50.112.237
  4    11 ms    12 ms    10 ms  ae-24-52.car3.London1.Level3.net [4.68.116.49]
  5    16 ms    14 ms    14 ms  195.50.90.190
  6    13 ms    14 ms    13 ms  212.58.238.153
  7    13 ms    13 ms    13 ms  rdirwww-vip.thdo.bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.131]

Now why is hop 1 99ms ?

Hop 1 is to your router. Some routers (I forget which ones) always report this as 99 ms. It's of no practical significance. The only thing that matters is the end-to-end latency, which in your case is about 13 ms.

Speedtouch routers and the Homehub.
Like you say its of no significance and something to do the router giving low priority to ICMP pings. (QoS)
