Issue with new ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A, web interface issue
« on: September 07, 2018, 05:32:41 PM »

Hi

Just received a new ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A I won on eBay. Bought it to replace my HG612 as the HG612 is getting old now and wanted a more supported device in terms of firmware. Plus I have read good things regarding its VDSL performance so thought id I give it a go. It doesn't look to have any ISP branding just looks to be a unlocked generic version. The issue is however when I attempt to set it up an interface group for bridge mode to connect to my X4S R7800, there is no broadband option under the network setting tab. I have attached a screenshot of what is displayed. I have tried different firmware versions and resetting the router back to factory defaults however the option is still not there. I have also tried it in multiple browsers however it makes no difference. In addition I have also tried plugging it into the phone line in the hope that could make the setting available but it does not. It syncs ok which I expected however it cannot obtain an IP address, but as there is no setting to change it to DHCP on WAN to allow an IP to be assigned I cant, that is least inportant part as I will be running it in bridge mode so that wont be used, just wanted it as a test. So even if in "standalone mode" ie modem router out the box, there is no option to set anything to do with the WAN connection. Has anyone else come across this issue and if so how did you resolve it? It maybe just a setting that needs enabling that I didn't know about or that I missed.

Many Thanks
Rhys

There is definitely something odd about the "Network Setting" menu of your VMG1312-B10A. I suspect the device is not as "vanilla" as you hoped it would be.

Attached, below, is an image from my VMG1312-B10A (captured when logged in as "supervisor").

@b**cat - I've just seen your reply, but @Computerman142 has said he has set it to bridge -  isn't that modem only so it will be expecting the router to handle PPP and DHCP.

Yes but there still should be a "Broadband" entry at the head of the "Network Setting" menu.

@Tubaman I haven't set it yet to bridge as I cant access the broadband settings to create an interface group for it. @Burakkucat I agree find it a bit odd there is not setting, is there way to unlock these routers fully, hopefully without serial connections internally if there is any.

My suggestion would be to --
  • Download one of the early firmware images from ZyXEL. (Say the V1.00(AAJZ.3)C0 version.)
  • Disconnect the VMG1312-B10A from the incoming line and your computer.
  • Power off the device.
  • With your favourite straightened out paper-clip, press and keep held the recessed "reset" switch.
  • Power on the device. Don't release the "reset" switch.
  • The power LED will flash red. Don't release the "reset" switch.
  • Eventually the power LED will display solid red. Release the "reset" switch.
  • Do not touch the device for, say, five minutes.
  • Connect the LAN1 port of the device to a computer with a standard Ethernet patch lead.
  • Configure the computer's NIC to a static address. I'll suggest 192.168.1.100.
  • Call up your web-browser and enter 192.168.1.1 into the address bar.
  • Specify the firmware image to upload and start the process.
  • Once it has completed, do not touch the device for, say, five minutes.
  • Disconnect the Ethernet patch lead and press the recessed "reset" switch. Hold it for ten seconds, then release.
  • Power-cycle the device.
  • Re-connect the Ethernet patch lead and from your computer's CLI invoke a logging "telnet" session, specifying the 192.168.1.1 address.
  • When prompted enter admin and 1234 as the login credentials.
  • At the "telnet" prompt enter "save_default clean".
  • At the "telnet" prompt enter "dumpmdm".
  • Exit the logging telnet session and search in the logfile for the string "supervisor". You should then see the "supervisor" password for your VMG1312-B10A. Make a safe copy.
  • Access the device via the GUI as normal. Use the "supervisor" credentials.
  • Check the menus.
  • Update the firmware with the johnson image to allow the usage of baby jumbo-frames.

If it was a VMG8924-B10A I would say that you need to login with the supervisor account and then and the "Broadband" option to the "Network Settings" list.

@Burakkucat I followed your guide, all good, many thanks for this, much appreciated all working now and have the broadband option, the Johnson firmware has extra features to in GUI, well to me they are, they may have been there originally but I didn't have them. Its a nice little router. Now time to plug it in and see how it performs to my HG612. Just for comparison I have put the current HG612 stats I just took now. I know banding is there, so nothing new will happen in that respect with ZyXEL so we will see over time.

@Burakkucat I followed your guide, all good, many thanks for this, much appreciated all working now and have the broadband option, . . .

You are welcome.  :)

Once a month (usually on the first, if I remember) I will connect to my VMG1312-B10A via logging SSH process and harvest a snapshot of statistics. Once gathered, the usual four snapshot plots are created. (Bit Loading, Hlog, QLN and SNR, all versus the sub-carrier index.)

Here is the complete command list that I use --

xdslctl info --state
xdslctl info --show
xdslctl info --stats
xdslctl info --SNR
xdslctl info --QLN
xdslctl info --Hlog
xdslctl info --Hlin
xdslctl info --HlinS
xdslctl info --Bits
xdslctl info --pbParams
xdslctl info --linediag
xdslctl info --linediag1
xdslctl info --vendor
xdslctl info --cfg
xdslctl info --webstats
xdslctl info --vectoring
xdslctl profile --show
xdslctl --version

Obviously I don't type them, one at a time, but just paste a copy of that entire list to the CLI prompt. The end result is the same.  ;)

@john & @burakkucat many thanks again for this, I may have go like you on harvesting the statistics once a month to see how my line is doing. One issue I have noticed is that the SNR slowly drops after I plugged it in, it was 7db but as the day went on it dropped to 4.7db, however by this morning it didn't recover and stayed around 4.9-5db on the downstream and has been throughout the day. I have also noticed this with a technicolor TG589vac v1 & v2 which both have the same chipset. However the HG635 which has the same BCM63168 chipset doesn't do this and neither did my HG612 and stuck around 6.6  - 7.3db. I have read it with someone using a billion ac2400 vdsl router had the same issue. Do any of you experience this? Not a major issue just hard to gauge the possible attainable rate, if the DLM makes changes, unless I reboot the ZyXEL.

As long as the SNR does not drop too low, I would not be that concerned. It is still "early days" with your usage of the device.

I do not see such a drop in the SNR with my VMG1312-B10A, only the typical fall and rise of the diurnal cycle.
