ZyXEL VMG 1312-B10A filter

Can anyone tell me exactly what the mysterious ‘filter’ is that this device possesses?

And which the -B10D does not possess, is that correct?

Is this a good thing?

Which other ZyXEL devices have modems that are the same quality?

Are there any that are better?

I saw a picture of the PCB but I have lost the url for it. I could not identify the magical filter device as a separate chip on the board because Indid not know what I was looking for. Is it even a discrete device as opposed to something just integrated into some large chip. could anyone set me straight?

I believe the magic filter people refer to is the cluster of discrete components just below the phone line in, so the top right corner in the pic. Looks to be a couple of polyester or similar film capacitors and some cased inductors.

My board is different to that pictured as the roundish thing below the 2 capacitors is a square cased item with the marking UT34297B, see this thread for more info:
