NTEs and lightning strike
« on: October 18, 2016, 03:22:41 PM »

Do any of the newer NTEs offer any worthwhile lightning protection? Must be without screwing up ADSL performance even in the slightest though.

I have a NTE5s dating back to to 2003 and 2011 I think. I think NTE5A, (mk 1) of the type shown in Kitz’s article anyway.

No, none.

Unlike the original NTE5, dating from the beginning of the 1980s, the current versions have no earth connection and no over-voltage gas discharge tubes to clamp both legs of the pair to earth.

In the current version NTE5 there are just a 1.8 micro Farad capacitor and a 470 kilo Ohm resistor connected in series across the pair.
