OR MK3 NTE5 Master socket RJ-45 compatibility
« on: September 24, 2016, 05:06:11 PM »

Does anyone knows whether RJ11 to RJ45 cable will be compatible with OR MK3 NTE5 socket?

I mean, can I plug RJ45 into the master socket and RJ11 into DSL port on router?

Is it any better than standard RJ11 to RJ11 cable?

If so, can you recommend any premium quality cables? Preferable 1-1.5m

My master socket was upgraded yesterday to the OR MK3 NTE5 socket, and I have a RJ45 connection into the adsl socket, and RJ11 into the DSL port on the router.  The RJ45 seems to have a snug fit compared to the RJ11, which can be wiggled when in the socket.

I don't know if it's any better than RJ11 to RJ11, but I'd like to know myself!

I bought my cable from mr.telephone on ebay - he's a very helpful seller.

I'm using these decent cables, but not into an OR Mk3 NTE5, but see what you think. Quite a few others are using them, so other posters may be able to comment

Can anyone confirm compatibility of an RJ-45 socket with an RJ-11 plug?

What about Belkin 1.8m RJ11 cable? Is it shielded? Isn't 1.8m too long for DSL cable?

It's not only compatible, it actually is an rj45 port, not an rj11 port (on the mk3 faceplate)
You can use eith rj45 or rj11 on the faceplate, but an rj45 will fit better

Thanks j0hn,

Do you recommend any premium quality, length of 1-2m maximum?

As short as it can be. I use a cat5e rj45 to rj11 cable from mr telephone on eBay. I previously used a pretty expensive Belkin DSL 1.8m cable, but the cable from eBay syncs 2mb higher than it. The seller has fantastic feedback and uploads regular handy YouTube videos. I highly recommend his cables, which he will make to pretty much any length for you.

I bought one of his cables and my sync speed has dropped I don't understand why. My previous cable was the cheap one that comes with modem

@Pauljbl I bought some cables from this eBay seller. I had the same experience, lower sync speed. But this could have been the evil work of DLM, and you would need to retest carefully to make sure. The question is what sync speed would you get now if you swapped back to the original cable, as per suggestion:

One of the MrTelephone eBay cables I had came apart. User GigabitEthernet had the same experience as me, by the sound of it. Our eBay seller seems a nice guy, good videos, don't like these particular cables.

I am using three TandyOnline cables now (RJ11-RJ11). The shortest ones I can get away with, 0.5m and 1.0m.These look well-built and perform fine. See

I don't know about the ADSL Nation (now Tandy) faceplate with VDSL2, it may not be VDSL-compatible. I currently don't use any filters of any kind because I don't use POTS, and so I just use straight-through, non-filtering faceplates on the front of my NTE5As.

I used to use the BT Pressac NTE-2005 filters with ADSL, see below
    https://www.run-it-direct.co.uk/BTNTE5ADSLfaceplate6way.html

With ADSL, I found that both the Tandy and the Pressac NTE-2005 faceplates were good, and with my ultra-long line I found that the Pressac had a very slight edge in performance. With a shorter line and stronger signal, I would expect both to perform well on ADSL. The Tandy with its more complex electronics (if memory serves) might be good with difficult phones or lots of phones connected.

If memory serves, some people have claimed that the BT Mk3 SSFP (faceplate filter) syncs slower than the original BT Pressac NTE 2005, but the Mk3 perhaps helps if you have a noisy line. Others will be able to comment. I doubt you can go too far wrong with a Mk3 SSFP, there’s just a possible slight design trade off between reliability and high sync speed.

Can anyone else comment  on the Mk3 with VDSL2 vs the alternative SSFP choices?

I've used those Belkin RJ11-RJ11 cables for long runs where I've had to. (A bad idea, keep the cable really short.) I don't like them much, they stick out a lot, forming a long lever arm and seem prone to easy damage. They seem to be shielded, but the shield isn't grounded.

I much prefer the Tandy cables to the Belkin ones, and the Tandy cables are available in all kinds of useful lengths including very short 0.5 m ones.
