New FTTC (Vodafone) with possible upstream issues
« on: August 17, 2016, 06:15:30 PM »

Hi

Recently moved my fibre connection from Sky to Vodafone.  After a little bit of discussion they provided me with the username and password so I could use a hacked HG612.  The Vodafone package is a 40/10 one (was 40/20 with Sky).  I seem to be getting a huge increase in FEC and CRC errors from about 8am to 8pm, and have sudden huge drops in upstream SNRM.  Not sure if its a fault, but it looks like DLM has kicked in to lower my upstream speed.  Have go DSLStats running and signed up for the webpage to keep uploaded going (same username as here if anyone is interested in checking them out).  Could some kind person take a look at my XDSLCMD output below and provide any thoughts?

Welcome to the Kitz forum.

I've just taken a quick look on MDWS but currently there is just not enough data uploaded to be able to "pronounce" on the circuit's behaviour. In fact there have been no uploads since 1809 hours this evening.  :(

There's certainly something odd going on with upstream, you have an attainable speed of over 20 Mbps,  but interleaving has been applied and you only have about 7 Mbps upstream,  you shoukd easily have the full 10 Mbps the package allows. I'm sure some of the resident experts will be along soon.

Incidentally I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have had 40/20 with Sky,  they only do 40/10 or 80/20, Plusnet we're the only ISP to do a 40/20 product and they've since stopped that.

when I first got the connection I was steady at 40/10 for the first couple of days, then it started dropping.  Went down to 5 up which is when I threatened to leave within my cooling off period.

Stats should be updating again now, I have to run the software in a Windows 10 VM as I'm a mac user!

you have quite a high number of ES on the upstream. DLM had already applied interleaving to the upstream but I would still expect you to sync at the maximum the product allows with the current SNRM and max attainable. Uploading to MDWS on a continuous basis would be the best way to get more in depth advice, as currently there's very little to go by. Are you sure you were on 40/20 with sky? I thought only Plusnet offered that package.

You could get a Raspberry Pi and run DSLStats on that 24/7, cheap to buy and cheap to run. Moving ISP is very unlikely to solve the issue as they all use the same copper connection to the cabinet, of course better support may well solve the problem quicker, but wait and see what the experts say.

I'm told that DSLstats runs well on a Mac using Wine.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Clearly I was wrong about Sky, although I thought I was getting the 40/20  ::)

I have changed the power saving on my Mac so that it won't sleep now and stop the upload to MDWS.  I've noticed this evening that my FEC errors increased to over 1.2M at 13.33!  I also see that my SNRM for upstream dropped from 16 to 6 at just after 9

Your line must have resynced when the snrm was low, that explains why your upload is so low, or thd DLM has lowered your sync to cope with the fluctuations. Obviously something is going on which is causing these wide fluctuations in snrm, but it doesn't appear to be affecting the downstream,  hopefully as the stats build up someone can offer some advice.

The Standard these days on the Upstream is Interleaved 1 or off INP 0 and Delay 0 but your Upstream has seen some instability and the DLM has set it to INT 155 INP 3.50 Delay 5

Something is not quite right on the upstream have you made any changes on your HG612 that may have effected the US ?

I was getting issues before using the HG612 (I think), but because of the locked down Vodafone router I couldn't see any stats, only connection speed.  All I've done with the HG612 is use the latest firmware, and change the internal address for port 2 to match my private network range (10.x subnet).  I've also got port 2 plugged into my Apple Airport Extreme (which is acting as the router).

Looking at the stats now its completely stable, very few errors, but I'll bet they'll start after 8 again tomorrow.  Peaked at over 1m FEC errors this evening and the almost completely flattened out.  SNRM on upstream dropped substantially twice tonight, from a steadyish 16 down to 6 and then 4 respectively then shot straight back up.

Wait so you've managed to use a third-party router with Vodafone Broadband? I didn't think such a thing was possible, even for employees!

That sounds interesting what's the model of the router that was supplied by Vodafone ?
As say already said in this thread a good 24 hours worth of stats is needed to get some idea what's happening to your stats during that time.

That was something that made me not consider them.

If they continue with the £28 deal for 80/20 I'll be switching my 2 lines to them, I could get a 3rd with the savings
