TP-Link TD-W9980 VDSL Router-Modem question
« on: April 09, 2016, 10:23:17 PM »

Hi,

Been long time since I've been active here but it is good time to come back :D

I was thinking about getting router TP-Link TD-W9980. I have seen it working well with G.INP that I have currently enabled on my downstream which makes my sync rate of 40000.

I am currently using unlocked HG 612B with HH5 B as a router for WiFi. It is all messed up a bit with the cabling, space and all that so I'd like to have 1 good router with good wifi instead of  having modem + router. My ISP is BT. I am on BT Infinity 1. My current latency is about 12-15ms with interleaving off and sync of 4000/7500.

TP-Link TD-W9980 matches my budget of 60 quid and it really looks nice. What do you guys think will it be good? I don't want to dissapoint myself with increased latency and lower sync so I am asking here for suggestions.

If it is good enough I may get it on Monday from PC World.

Thanks guy!

Kitz has a review on the TP-Link TD W9980

Thanks Newtron,

Never seen this review here :O

To be honest I need a router with decent wifi signal as my parents can't even watch youtube in HD without buffering on HH5 which is in the same room 2 metres away from the TV. Sometimes even the websites open very slow.

I've heard good things about it, however I'm a bit dissapointed with TP-Link's 5Ghz configurations for Europe, they don't seem to make much use of the available channels which now means you end up stuck with 1 set of channels to use and everybody's routers seem to be using them...

I'm currently using an Archer C9, only reason my 5Ghz WiFi works fine is because I've got it setup as if its in America meaning it using channels 149 - 161, my only other choice using the United Kingdom settings would be 36 - 48 and they broadcast at a much lower power level than the one I'm using and all my neighbors routers are also using these channels.

Is there any reason you won't use the HH5B's built in modem and remove the modem... the HH5b I'm sure your aware is G.INP capable and the WiFi channels can be set at 100 - 128, if your HH5B's 5Ghz channel is currently set to 36 - 48 then change them manually to 100 or above, this will make the HH5B broadcast at a higher power output...

I've attached a picture which tell you the different transmit power levels of channels below.

Hope this helps :)

thanks mlmclaren for your reply and the screenshot.

There are few reasons why I don't want to keep the HH5B, because it reboots every few days is the main reason. The others are lack of space and poor WiFi. I have tried everything, including changing channels but it won't help. Still buffering videos on youtube using wifi. I just want a router All in One and this one matches my budget and is G.INP compatible which is the most important thing. Also it looks like a £5.00 router :D

Is there a possibility that this router will lower the latency?

No problem and oh ok sorry to here that, the W9980 will probably do you just fine then, though if you require high internal network speeds (maybe a NAS for backups and storage) as far as latency is concerned it can vary 1-2ms on different DSL chipsets but mainly depends on your location and the route your pings take to get to their location...

How are you getting your latency reading?

Using the ping tool in my Archer C7 I get the following to the BBC

Quote
PING bbc.co.uk (212.58.244.22): 64 data bytes
Reply from 212.58.244.22:  bytes=64  ttl=54  seq=1  time=7.307 ms
Reply from 212.58.244.22:  bytes=64  ttl=55  seq=2  time=8.412 ms
Reply from 212.58.244.22:  bytes=64  ttl=54  seq=3  time=7.576 ms
Reply from 212.58.244.22:  bytes=64  ttl=54  seq=4  time=7.117 ms

--- Ping Statistic "bbc.co.uk" ---
Packets: Sent=4, Received=4, Lost=0 (0.00% loss)
Round-trip min/avg/max = 7.117/7.603/8.412 ms

I used my router as I'm not hardwired to it at the moment.

I am getting 13-14ms to bbc.co.uk and 12-13ms to google.com

That could be the reason for the higher latency then  :-\

Do you mean higher latency on TP-Link 9980 or in general?

Alright, I am gonna get it tomorrow probably. Do I just simply plug in DSL cable into the DSL port on router and all done? Are there any procedures when switching modems to not to upset DLM?

When changing equipment is recommended that you leave the modem or modem-router disconnected for 30 minutes so that DLM picks it up as user interference and not as a drop or fault.

When you get it, I would recommend setting up the wireless and routers setting with the DSL lead plugged out, whilst its also plugged out configer the PPPoE username and password.

Once you have the settings on the router as required and 30 minutes has passed then power down the router, attach DSL cable and power up... all being well it should go straight online....

If it don't go online it may be a WAN configuration issue (incorrect login/password or another setting) don't power down/restart the router again (this could upset DLM)

Also have the latest firmware from TP-Link's site ready for upload onto it before you plug in DSL... this will ensure it has G.INP capable firmwares on it.

Also the chances are the latest firmware will have the configurations for BT VDSL ready instead of having to enter various settings.
