Is it true that Plusnet IP Profile is 88% of Sync Speed?
« on: April 06, 2016, 04:14:27 PM »

Hi, I was thinking about switching to Plusnet soon. But have only just realised that the IP Profile is 88% of the Sync Speed unlike BT where its 96%?

If this is true I think I will stick with BT then. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks

The Plusnet "Current Line Speed" is set to whatever the BTw IP Profile is, but rounded down to the nearest 0.2 Mb for FTTC (0.1 Mb for 21CN, or the exact amount of rounding might actually depend on how high the speed is).

Is OP talking ADSL2/2+ or FTTC? The 88%  (actaully 88.2%) rounded down is for the former. The 96%, doesn't that sound like an approximation of the FTTC calculation?

I should have researched this more before posting, but thanks for the answers. As far as I can tell it is the same as BT at 96.8% of the sync speed  :)

I got confused as here: http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/broadband_terminology.shtml

Quote
21st Century Network (21CN)
Available in a growing number of UK exchanges, 'Wholesale Broadband Connect' (WBC) technology is used to provide:
  • Speeds up to a theoretical maximum of 8Mb via ADSL1
  • Speeds up to a theoretical maximum of 24Mb via ADSL2+
  • Speeds up to a theoretical maximum of 80Mb via Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC)

It then states that:
Quote
21CN products: the IP profile will always be 88.2% of the sync rate

Which would indicate that FTTC is 88.2% which isn't correct... Confusing

It's either an out of date page, or they distinguish 21CN from GEA products.

For my Plusnet FTTC line, I sync at 79999, and have an IP profile of 77.35. Plusnet reflect this speed in their own copy.

Note that, while Plusnet's line speed reflects the same number, my experience is that the actual throughput lags behind the absolute best speed slightly. Tests where PN staff have given my line an "unlimited" speed, I've achieved throughput of a couple of Mbps faster. I guess it allows their QoS prioritisation system to work.

77350/79999 X 100 = the magical number of 96% on FTTC :)

Nice one I look forward to switching to Plusnet then!
Also because I will get my locked 66999 sync rate taken away ;D

When I was on plusnet, I had speeds 1-2mbit below equal sync rates on BT retail and sky, but as I said before I understand this as else their QoS wouldnt work.

Plusnet rep's if pushed enough will manually raise the plusnet profile to remove this QoS overhead.  Which will last up until the point a new one has to be generated.
