Gaelic certainly hasn't died out quite yet where I am. It is very much in hiding though.

Gaelic looks scary because (unlike Welsh) the spelling system is a code, one in which about four times as many consonants are encoded. So it's like DSL, with more bits per bin being assigned than say in the case of Spanish or Hawaiian. It's comparable with Sanskrit and some W African languages (if memory serves, which it does not).
