The HG612 has a log which can be enabled and viewed via the GUI.

It is also possible to view the log by making a telnet connection to the device and from the 'ATP>' prompt issue the command 'display log'.

Example --

Code: [Select]
[Duo2 Cattery]$ telnet 192.168.1.254
Trying 192.168.1.254...
Connected to 192.168.1.254.
Escape character is '^]'.

Do you have any suitable device that you could use in place of the current HG612? There is always the possibility that the HG612 is defective.  :-\

I only have a HH5A as an altenative which as you know isn't much use in terms of stats :/

I could try hard resetting or reflashing the HG612 if you thought that might make a difference?

Does the modem have any kind of log that can be checked? Either in the GUI or on the command line?

I can't access the GUI atm but with thanks to burakkucat's instructions on how to access the log:

I would have run the 'Set date/time script' that ships with the HG612 Stats program at some stage after reconnecting the system last Tuesday.

I could try hard resetting or reflashing the HG612 if you thought that might make a difference?

You could try the above though having knowledge of latent hardware failures your HG612 is showing the signs of this via the power off for 8 hours this lets the small solder joints on the circuit to cool down and then expand to close the open circuit or the pin connected to the chip.

Of course this is just me looking in and giving electronic hardware advise it still could be software /firmware related  :-\

Well I have just hit the reset hardware button on the HG612 -asI didn't think leaving it connected with the FEC errors would necessarily tell us any more than last time - and the bitswaps look like they are back with the FEC errors gone again... ???

You could try the above though having knowledge of latent hardware failures your HG612 is showing the signs of this via the power off for 8 hours this lets the small solder joints on the circuit to cool down and then expand to close the open circuit or the pin connected to the chip.

Note that I did not power off the modem overnight this time - just held down the reset switch for a while - so if its a sign of hardware failure I presume it should reappear sooner than it did before..

And the GUI has come back.. if someone has step by step instructions for dummies on how to enable pings on the HG612 I would be grateful (I seem to get it wrong!)

ICMP pings? From the WAN side or from the LAN side?

From the WAN side- I want to get something like https://f8lure.mouselike.org/ monitoring the line..

(I imagine it can be done from the GUI but telnet would be better [if poss - as I can't always access the GUI successfully without rebooting the modem]

Sounds like your modem has problems. I suggest you try a replacement.

From what you have mentioned, I have to agree with Dray's diagnosis.  :(

Also check the PSU it sould be 12v at 1amp try a compatible PSU if you have one these are the last steps before sending the HG612 to the grave.

Apologies, I'm suffering a cold amongst other things, and these threads seem to be getting muddled in my head, with too much in them to follow properly. Treat this answer as lower than normal quality.

It doesn't look like the log captures any event that we could tie to either the loss of bit swapping or the start of FEC - even if the time stamping would need fixing to make an absolute correlation. I think it can be ignored.

IIRC, the FEC rate is so high it could mean errors being present all the time - so might be explained, for example, by a hardware fault. A bit turned off permanently in the DSP in some way. A constant FEC rate is unusual to the point of absurdity. You could try a reflash, but I don't think it will help, as you aren't failing 100% of the time.

The loss of bitswap is equally strange - but this time was separated by hours. Even if zero bitswaps leads to a suboptimal bit-loading, any increase in the error rate would be both gradual and random.

I suspect, therefore, that these two aren't quite "cause" and "effect". That they are both just correlated symptoms of something else inside the modem. If the GUI disappears at roughly the same time, I'd add that too.

I think I'd be heading for a different modem at this point.

Responding to ICMP pings ... is down to the router, not the modem. Does that mean you might need to consider a replacement for both?

All,

Thanks! I think I will try reflashing next time the FEC errors come back just to see if it makes any difference but am getting the clear message that I should probably just start hunting for a new modem!  :)

To my surprise, it appears replacement HG612's are going for over £20 on a certain auction site - though I have also asked in another thread for thoughts on the TP-Link W9970 which appears at first glance to be more capable for only a few pounds more..

WWWombat: Hope you feel better soon. Re: ICMP pings-I have the Home Hub 5A which doesn't respond to pings - as such I thought it was possible for the HG612 to do so and let the HH5A do everything else as it does now?

The access to the HG612 GUI seems to disappear after I access it a few times - not sure why. Doesn't seem linked to the FEC/Bitswapping in terms of timing.. and the HG612 ran perfectly for months before any issues appeared on the line (and its not in a place where it would overheat)

For those interested - following all your advice I have today replaced the HG612 with a Zyxel VMG8924 running firmware version V100AAKL7C0

Its been online for 45 minutes (since around 13:30) and initial impressions are that both the Downstream and Upstream SNRM (especially U0) are up as are the max attainable figures..

Not quite sure what is happening on the Bitswaps front - initially seemed to be much more variable than before but it may be settling down now - and MDWS no longer seems to report the Attenuation dB.

Am aware that I am on an old firmware version but thought I would give this time to settle first and than look at what is different in the other ones..

Would welcome any views/thoughts/impressions.
