FTTC line profile
« on: February 07, 2016, 01:42:45 PM »

hello,

just looking for some advice on a longer term ongoing issue. i raised this question back in august last year with plus net :

http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,143322.msg1263907.html#msg1263907
Quote
my connection is solid, pings are good to online games and ive no problem with the overall service but can someone please check my line profile and confirm if this is right?

the package im on was quoted from support as : WP Product: WBC FTTC Annex A 20Mbit/s Up, 40Mbit/s Down, Standard Stability which is the 40mb package i'm paying for

the line profile was: WP Profile: 19300 or Profile Name   0.128M-20M Downstream, Error Protection Off - 0.128M-5M Upstream, Error Protection Off

Router stats: - Fritz Box 7490g

Receive direction   Send direction
Max. DSLAM throughput   kbit/s   20000   5000
Min. DSLAM throughput   kbit/s   128   128
Attainable throughput   kbit/s   24083   4606
Current throughput   kbit/s   20000   4521
Seamless rate adaptation      off   off

Latency      fast   fast
Impulse noise protection      0   0
G.INP      off   off

Signal-to-noise ratio   dB   9   6
Bitswap      on   off
Line attenuation   dB   28   41

Profile   17a
G.Vector      off   off

Carrier record      A43   A43

My issue here is that my router has been quoting attainable speeds of 20mbit+ since i joined plus net but is never allowed to increase. can someone provide some information on how the profiles work and why the line doesnt try to increase in speed for 'training' etc.

more recent stats from Fritz.box:
Quote
Receive direction   Send direction
Max. DSLAM throughput   kbit/s   20000   5000
Min. DSLAM throughput   kbit/s   128   128
Attainable throughput   kbit/s   24776   4852
Current throughput   kbit/s   20000   4737
Seamless rate adaptation      off   off

Latency      fast   fast
Impulse noise protection      0   0
G.INP      off   off

Signal-to-noise ratio   dB   10   6
Bitswap      on   on
Line attenuation   dB   28   41

Profile   17a
G.Vector      off   off

Carrier record      A43   A43

if you check the reply from plus net, they state that as my line speed matches estimates, they cant do anything. is this normal? it doesnt seem normal that my line speed never increases or decreases depending on conditions does it? and why would my profile showing a limiting max of 20mb be acceptable?

any help appreciated

What does http://dslchecker.bt.com/ report for your phone line? (pls remove your number before posting!)

                 High   Low   High   Low
FTTC Range A (Clean)        30 20.2   6.5   4.4
FTTC Range B (Impacted)   23.3   11.4   5.8   2.3

one response i got from their support stated

TAGs (Clean): Download: 20.7 Mbps - 30 Mbps / Upload: 4.3 Mbps - 6.4 Mbps. 80% Acceptable Sync Rate = 16.56Mb.

Its possible the Openreach DLM monitoring your line thinks that it needs to cap your speed to maximise line stability - especially as your Signal-to-noise ratio is higher than the default 6.

A few more questions.

1. Are you running the latest firmware on the modem?
2. Is it plugged into the BT master socket? Could you try plugging it to the test socket to see if that makes any difference to the SNR or speed figures?
3. Have you run the speedtest at http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ ? What does it report.
4. If you make a voice call or dial 17070 and opt for the Quiet Line test do you hear any audible noise on the line (best carried out with a corded phone if available)?

the higher SNR margin will be to do with the Fritz box settings, i changed that last time i rebooted to check to see if there was a significant change in errors when set to 'max speed' but there wasn't.

1. yes
2. yes been in test socket since it was installed
3.  Download speed achieved during the test was - 18.38 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 13.55 Mbps-19.36 Mbps .
 Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 19.36 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 4.01Mbps
 Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps
4. dont have a phone connected or available at the moment but had a line fault resolved shortly before moving to plus net.

note on 4: live in an 'aluminium' area so BT engineers are always nearby. when i was with BT previously i had several visits. the last engineer traced my entire line and reset all joints as he saw from record there had been a lot of issues (never been a fault since). at that point he said my line had been set on a different profile for a fault and he would need a reset done. i'm fairly sure this was never done.
