If you haven't clicked the link then note that it includes TV cancellations - in fact that was the initial reason the investigation was opened; I'm sure you can all work out for yourselves which particular TV provider that was/is ;)

There was a mod report that came through wondering if this was the correct place for the topic.
However since it relates to OFCOMs investigation into EU's having problems cancelling Phone, Broadband and TV with Sky, this section is probably the best home for it.

Personally I can't see that many people having problems cancelling phone/broadband - moving it maybe but isn't that all done by the "gaining provider" these days?

The only people likely to have cancellation issues are those with Sky TV where (& they're on very dodgy grounds legally) Sky changed the T&Cs such that you have to cancel via phone for "security reasons". If you contested this in small claims court you'd win as snailmail is a valid way to end any contract in England & Wales (pretty sure its the same in Scotland) but obviously most people don't want to do that. I think the old-fashioned way of describing this sort of behaviour was "sharp practice" ;)

It was (IIRC) the Daily Telegraph who got Ofcom to open the investigation into Sky which I found amusing.

The Sky 'Trick' is you have to ring a specific number, according to all information you can find. (I am sure it was buried in some T's & C's somewhere.)
This number is of course hard to get an answer on and has a queue of people ringing it at all times.
The normal queuing system does not seem to be working on this number, so you can spend hours trying to get an answer without knowing if you are next or back of a queue of 25!!
(This is based on 'real' experience NOT apocryphal 'Common Knowledge'.)

In reality, you can get through to the normal SKY Support line and be transferred ...... if they are in a mood to do so.  ;D ;D
Sometimes you will get the 'Please call this number' script instead.

All this effort is to enable you to 'enjoy' the retention team script to make you stay.  ;D ;D
Many people do this every year to get a substantial discount on their monthly outlay, personally I was glad to escape. :D :D

Surely, as said earlier, snail mail has to be a valid method, so if you don't have the patience to wait on phone lines, then be given a time-wasting load of bull and then for all I know be ignored, registered mail (signed for) is just the ticket. Or am I wrong?

Although it should be enough to send a letter via snail mail, SKY are past masters at NOT getting the message in all senses  ;D ;D
You could take them to court if you wished but I would find that more painful than the Telephone hell described. (Time and effort involved etc)

I have had no end of trouble, in the past, trying to get people at SKY to understand a problem and/or escalate it to the correct dept.
I believe this is no accident !!  ;D

There are 1001 ways to be within the letter of the law without being anywhere near the spirit, this is the arena SKY and many other companies like to live in.
It would take a Consumer/Company law specialist to tell you what is or is not valid in their T's & C's and that is what catches most people out.
Very often T's & C's are deliberately ambiguous and badly written to give leeway for 'interpretation'.  ;D ;D
