BTW in Skye wild rumour
« on: October 22, 2015, 10:29:57 AM »

This kind of rumour was posted in the Skye local gossip forum that is SkyeFreeAds but also used for chat :

“BT Wholesale have just confirmed that they have reached capacity in South Skye for broadband connections. In fact some existing customers will have lost their connection. No plans to extend.”

(The last part I find especially ridiculous.)

Does anyone have any idea where this might have come from?

Try putting a few numbers (or address+postcode) through the BT Wholesale checker & see what they say.

There was something similar in Stornoway fairly recently.

Turns out that BT didn't want to do anything about (full) ancient DSLAMs as they were planning on putting VDSL2 into the Stornoway exchange. Given the preponderance of EO lines there and the location of the exchange I don't know how that will turn out - for most of central Stornoway it'll be OK but hardly anyone lives there & those that do are in bedsits. The majority of Stornoway's population is at least 1km away from the exchange by road.

I suspect you're going to find the DSLAMs are full and obsolete - or the backhaul is totally saturated & requires physical replacement. Either one will require beancounter approval for any engineering works & if its not on the "subsidised by taxpayers" list then it could be a fair old wait.

I tried the BTWholesale ADSL checker, putting in lots of phone numbers in the area of the Broadford exchange that serves me, and found nothing unusual. Maybe I need to try points further south as well.

Does anyone know for certain that you would see something (what) reported by the ADSL checker?

(I didn't in addition go as far as pretending to order a service on some line.)

ADSL would show as unavailable if you're using :

https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html

Not sure I'd call Broadford "South Skye", Armadale is more like it surely?

Indeed, I thought I might have to try points further south than me.
