BT revive FoD in Wales.
« on: October 10, 2015, 11:17:28 AM »

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2015/10/bt-resuscitate-330mbps-fibre-on-demand-broadband-in-wales.html

I think this is a good step in the right direction.

While FoD implementation still seems rather highly priced, particularly on the monthly fees, hopefully in the future as G.fast, and FTTP, connections start to compete with it, then FoD pricing will come down.

In my opinion BT are pricing themselves out of their FoD market. It seems good technology, and if it was just that the EU had to pay for the physical cable to be laid down with a lump sum of money, then a reasonable per monthly fee, I think this would be acceptable. I would be willing to pay a lump sum + say £40 - £60 a month for a 330mbps service.

Dream on. There isn't a hope in hell of FTTPoD dropping that low inside 5 years & there's very little chance of any retail ISPs selling a g.fast connection for that price - unless you have a cap on data.

What about paying triple that amount per month?

The Openreach price list on their website has FTTPoD end user rental at £1,188.00 per year (£99 per month). BTWholesale has it at £140 per month. All prices excluding VAT. But an ISP would also have to consider how much bandwidth they'll need to pay for across the BTWholesale network or other backhaul, and for Internet peering/transit.

sold.

...and the install fee for Skye would be :D

Edit - I assume we all know that FTTPoD is positioned as a business product within BT Wholesale & not retail? ie it is NOT the same thing as FTTP (confusing or what?).

I don't understand why there is a big monthly fee on the product.

Is it for bandwidth reasons?

Also how are bandwidth prices actually set? Does the ISP get a bandwidth charge that they pass on to the EU in various degrees. If so, who does the ISP pay it to? Does BT pay itself?  :-\

It's the monthly charge that brings these products down.

I think the big monthly fee helps pay towards the installation/build cost.

...and what do you know, its not actually available after all. More smoke & mirrors from BT to make it appear they are meeting targets.

Colour me unsurprised....

there's very little chance of any retail ISPs selling a g.fast connection for that price - unless you have a cap on data.

BT Retail themselves sell 330Mbps with no cap for £53.45 a month to consumers (Infinity 4)... if you are one of the chosen few who can get FTTP proper. Plus line rental, which really makes sense.

If G.FAST becomes the "2nd generation copper bodge" for the masses then I don't see why it won't be around the same price or less. I thought G.FAST is meant to be "cheaper" to deploy, hence it's BT's pet technology of 2015?
