I thought of this thread earlier today, while enjoying a sip of beer in a pub I visit whenever I am nearby.   The pub is good, the beer is always excellent.  But I couldn't help be distracted by a beautifully printed sign on the wall, directing people to the facilities.   Alongside a clear arrow pointing through an archway, it read precisely:

Ladies
&
Gentleman
Toilets

Oops.  And Oops again.   ::)

Could easily go the wrong way if you're in a hurry.   ;D

There seem to ample apostrophe's apoplectic apologists around the nation. :D

My philosophy is if you can read & understand the text even if the grammer and punctuation is incorrect there is no need to get yourself wound up or grit your teeth that is your flaw and if thats all you worry about then life is treating you well.

PS ISS siteing/sighting at 19:18 so its back again in the northern hemisphere  ;D

EDIT incase the grammer nazi's get me  :D

Go on i am one of the worst offenders here with apostrophe's my spelling is bad the reason for so many edits in my posts.

I don't use a spell checker and don't preview my posts before hitting the send button its all done from my fingers with a gammy middle index finger.  ;)

@NewtronStar  - I get pain and numbness in my wrists and arms if I do too much typing, and I live on constant pain medication that makes me very very dozy. Spelling autocorrection can be great or something that fights you and drives you bonkers.

I find the latter occurs when it is an American version of English that is driving the auto-corrector.  ::)

I find this thread interesting. I was educated in a 'special' school. Mainly because of a physical disability. We were also bunched in with people with other disabilities, like the blind, the deaf and people with mental conditions.

This meant that the level of education I received was barely up to GCSE standards. I have always tried my best when it came to spellings, punctuation and general grammar. I know that as always been my weak point though.

Being a technical mind, is there a simple page that gives examples of when to use what apostrophe?

The Apostrophe Protection Society

for just £2 a month you can help rescue a poor, abused apostrophe and give them a new life...  :P

I note, with some degree of amusement, that I am the only contributor to this thread who has made the point of removing the rogue apostrophe from the subject line . . .  :D

I haven't bothered, because the version with the false apostrophe is the title of the thread. :P

@ Bowden You are to be congratulated. There PhDs and the like, whose spelling and grammar are far inferior to yours.

Definitely I would recommend that if you aren't familiar with the correct usage of apostrophes then just leave them out altogether rather than putting them in in hope and getting it wrong.

If you can take the time to read up on it, then your readers will have reason to thank you for it.

What happens if we try and google the topic?
