@Loonylion - the revered Netgear DG834 v3 which I used to use all the time was a TI AR7 I believe, which gave very high sync rates.
The match with the DSLAM being also TI has been discussed before in the forums and I believe the consensus was that matching isn't a thing of great significance.

@burakkucat - I should have checked, is the Huawei a modem-only device, or can it be converted to such permanently.
If I had a brain, I would have asked this question before buying one on eBay, not after. :-( :-)

The Huawei MT882 has the ability to NAT/Firewall/DHCP sever but it all can be turned off.
I once had one (briefly) acting as a pure bridge

so that my laptop was acting as the DSL client and controlled the PPP session via the Ethernet interface.
*
Bridged the ADSL and Ethernet sockets, converting to/from the other data format.
