REIN - Buzzing on AM radio
« on: June 23, 2015, 06:13:00 PM »

Often I notice a lot of CRC errors and curious buzzing on AM radion at frequency about 1200 kHz. What is it? I've recorded it on buzzing.wma.  What is it ? It lasts about hour with few seconds breaks. I hear it even if I am outdoors.

That sounds like mains transformer interference it will sound like a low hum to your ears when you are close to it but it sounds very different when using an AM radio and that's what you are hearing.

commonly known as mains substations, though if this is the source of interference then there must be an issue at your neighbouring substation'

I have a large one 100 meters away and the radio does not pickup any interference from that source.

Can Transformers in main substatations cause this type of interference? It occur sometimes, about 1 hour time.

Yes if there is a brewing fault at the substation.

Brewing fault = beginning of fault ?

Yes it could be the regulators and that needs to be replaced.

My two-penneth. I have never had a REIN issue that was proven to be emanating from an electrical sub-station. You may very well pick up interference on an AM radio if nearby, but without using a spectrum analyser on your circuit, it can not be proven to be service-affecting noise.

I had a case only last week that had noise booming (and I do mean booming), out of a premises on the van radio at 612Khz. I won't go into details but this noise was not service affecting whatsoever.

It sounds like you're describing my recent OR visit! Strange coincidence...:-\

It is certainly service-affecting noise because I see a lot of CRC errors always if I have this noise on AM radio. If there is 5 seconds break in the noise I have 5 seconds break in CRC errors. It is perfect coincidence. However it does not affect service on standard target SNR margin 6 dB. It affects on SNR margin ~1 dB.
