Just a little update on this.
I changed the setup slightly to give the 5GHz channels a separate SSID and reconfigured our iPad to ONLY use that.
Performance watching streamed TV (F1 Austrian GP practice sessions on Sky Go) is excellent whereas previously I had regularly seen loss of quality due to throughput issues (probably other devices using the wireless bandwidth).

More to the point it still works outside the back of the house on my garden patio, even though the router is by the front door and there are several walls in between!

Excellent.  Glad it went to a good home and that you are seeing some benefit from it :)

I'm wondering if you are using the EE DNS servers?

Perhaps try with Google's public DNS servers? (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4)

I'll give that a go B*CAT and the last time i was able to change the DNS on the router was when using the D-LINK 2640B.

Ummmm...   hate to sound a meanie..   but may as well take this opportunity to say something.
I don't expect the regs to donate because I appreciate input and advice given..  but please don't forget I have quite substantial running costs too.   I also put a huge amount of unpaid time into the site - things like the adslchecker and other similar pages take a lot of coding and I wont even begin to start on admin stuff such as maintaining forum software and other similar updates - I dont ever expect any return on this.

However, I have to pay for UK managed and dedicated services as the site wont cope on home-hosted or even shared hosting.   Yet I only average just one donation per month - some months not even that :(

That's good to know. Hopefully it will remain permanent.  :)

(I stopped using my CP's DNS server about seven years ago . . . and have never looked back.)

I have used namebench in the past. There is nothing to install (for an OS that uses a Linux kernel), the source code archive is downloaded and unpacked, then the utility (written in python) is executed.

Attached, below, is the README file.

I've used DNS Benchmark a few times, and found it does a good job. It's a Windows program, but it doesn't need installing and it works perfectly in Linux with Wine.
