Master socket is in loft now insulated difficult access?
« on: June 06, 2015, 02:47:32 PM »

My master socket is in the loft accessed by loft ladder and boarded.  However the loft has been insulated and is no longer fully boarded what options do I have if BT need to do a repair?  Thanks

It would really depend upon what work is required and the assessment of the technician tasked to attend.

One option might be to abandon that part of the circuit and fit a new NTE5/A in a more conventional and accessible location . . .

Thanks - should it ever have been placed up their in the first place? Its not exactly the easiest location?  Even when fully boarded it wasn't great.  Having done some searches don't BT normally go into the loft areas whatever?

I think that is the literal interpretation of the current safety regulations but I understand that there is some degree of leeway which would allow the technician to make an assessment on a case-by-case basis.  :-\

Perhaps Black Sheep will be willing to give us his own personal interpretation . . . when he next passes this way, please?  :)

The last conversation i had with a Oprenreach Engineer they are not permitted to climb into the loft to do any internal work up there i guess it must come under the health and safety Act but you can go up there or a third party and move the master socket.

In the first instance, I would be inclined to ask BTOR, via to whomsoever you pay your line rental, to shift the master socket to a more reasonable location - in their own interests should future problems arise.

If they decline, and you have the wherewithal, I would recommend shifting it yourself. Any subsequent visiting BTOR technician will not complain about it not being in the loft.  ;)
