Tesco FTTC
« on: February 03, 2015, 05:09:46 PM »

Hello all.

I've recently upgraded from ADSL to Tesco FTTC.  In order to de-clutter, I'd like to get an all-in-one modem/router and get rid of the BT Openreach modem.  I asked Tesco's Customer Services if the AVM FRITZ!Box 7490 would be compatible.  They said by removing the BT modem, I invalidate the BT FTTC warranty.

Is this true?

warranty? on a broadband connection? Sounds to me like customer services don't have a clue what they're talking about.

There's a lot going on in BT's FTTC world right now.

Removing the Openreach modem is not something I would recommend :)

If the Openreach modem is a Huawei EchoLife HG612 and not an ECI B-FOCuS /r, then I would continue to use it (certainly for the time being).

I would discard any router that TalkTalk have provided and replace it with something to my own liking.

If Tesco FTTC is TalkTalk and if you have a TT super router (as they call it) then using it instead of a BT supplied modem like the HG612 or ECI is not going to affect anything. I am a TT customer and I have one of their routers which I have used without the HG612 with no problem at all. I have also used a ZyXEL VMG8324-B10a router as well. Currently I use an unlocked HG612 as a modem and the TT super router connected to it by choice as it seems to work well and I get full statistics from the HG612 using DSLStats. I use the HG612 as it allows me to cap my speeds which the TT router does not.

So take you choice and have a go, there is no such thing as a guarantee on broadband. The only thing they can ask is that if you have a problem they can ask that you re-instate the original equipment as a test to see if the problem still exists.

Any reason for not using the ECI/r ?

It shares a  very  similar lantiq chipset the 7490

It is not a Broadcom chipset.

I believe the AVM FRITZ!Box 7490 will work on BT FTTC as long as Tesco don't use weird authentication like Sky does.

I've learnt the hard way, stick with the Openreach modem and just connect a router of your choice to it. With the ECI/r I'm getting top end of what my line can provide and I find my line is more stable with it.

I've tried the following connected directly to my line, ZyXel VMG8324-B10A, ASUS AC68U, BILLION 8800NL and non match the ECI/r.

The problem is of course that every line is different, and what works best on one line isn't necessarily the best on another line.

Many thanks for all your posts.

I have a Tesco supplied Technicolor TG582n along with a BT Openreach ECI B-FOCuS V-2FUb/r.  However, as I'm unable to pull any line stats off, I would really like to replace the router.  But instead of forking out 50-60 quid on another router, I thought I'd put that money into an all-singing-all-dancing VDSL modem/router.

However, it seems the general consensus is to keep the Openreach modem on.

So, from a "money saving" point-of-view, is it possible to convert a LAN port off my old router (D-Link DSL2640R) to a WAN port?  I've Googled this and couldn't find an answer, so I would appreciate if one of you gurus could tell me how to do this.

Thanks in advance.

I would have thought it would be a full time job comparing and getting a months worth of stats for each of the 3 different FTTC modems  :o it's hard enough just to analyze the HG612 stats output for 2 weeks
