A question concerning replacing router
« on: August 14, 2014, 10:23:38 AM »

This one was difficult to place, so apologies.
I am swapping out the 582N for a Billion 8800NL. Before I start, I'd like to know  whether it'd be better to completely remove any reference to the existing network in my Windows system and start over, or to leave things as are. Please

All other advice is welcome too.

Not sure what issues you are thinking of but if the previous router previous router was in normal DHCP mode the 8800Nl router should just work.  Otherwise you may need to match the old router network settings.   The answer correct answer depends on your set up.

582N was set up automatically. I made a first attempt yesterday and things started to get a bit muddly, why I do not know. Will make another attempt soon.

The ISP supplied 582N will certainly have had DHCP enabled, so you shouldn't need to change anything in your PC's network settings. In the 8800NL web interface, select Quick Start, and fill in the details. Most should be automatically filled in.

I dont know why, but Ive noticed of late that whenever I put a new router on that Windows tells me 'No network connection'.  Then it will automatically generate a new network connection each time I add a new router.   So I know have Network 1 from the HG612/TG582n.  Network 2 for the Zyxel,  Network 3 for another...  and even a Network 4 for yet another router which is exactly the same make and model as the one for Network 3.

The only thing to watch out for is when Windows autodetects a new router, it will automatically set it up as a Public Network, so I just click on the network settings and change the location to Home.

I dont think it matters that the other network settings are still there...  or at least I leave mine.... as I intend putting the Zyxel back on asap.

It may have been my ineptitude, but I've been performing a dance on hot coals supplemented with razor blades getting the router set up. No idea why but it seemed in end that the only way I could get wireless set up was to delete the PN Home network. I say seemed because my vintage noddle was about done. ::) :D

Quick edit ( technically OT

Do I need to reinstall DSLstats or can i edit current details etc?

Just change the login details (the 8800NL is on the drop-down list - edit any details which you've changed from the default). If you use traffic monitoring you'll need to change that setup as well: the command is ifconfig and the interface is ppp***.

the problem is that everything is greyed out.

I am also trying to get the few things that presently are used wirelessly up and running; and struggling!

Radio: have entered SSID and wifi security code as per Billion instructions and WPA/PSk encryption, but it doesn't work despite several attempts. I'm puzzled what I'm doing wrong. :-[

Router has two small buttons noted in pamphlet
1. Push WPS button to trigger Wi-Fi protected Setup function
2.Press WLAN button more than 2 seconds to switch on/off the whole wireless connectivity

Are they part of my troubles?

I must sound stupid, so you cna tell me to whatever, but I hope you can assist.

If that's still referring to DSLstats, the login configuration page will be greyed out if DSLstats is recording. Press the Stop or Pause button, then try again.

I'll have a go!

Ignore button number one.

Press and hold button number two for a minimum of two seconds. Watch the LEDs on the device. There should be one to specifically indicate the on/off status of the wireless subsystem. If the wireless subsystem is now on, continue with the set-up. If the wireless subsystem appears to be off, then repeat the press & hold of button number two once again.

(Just between the pair of us, I am also having problems in configuring the wireless subsystem of my modem/router . . .  :-[  )

Several attempts made but not sure getting anywhere. Router lights lit and green:
Power; LAN1(link from computer); WLAN; DSL; Internet. Other LAN ports are not connected, and WPS and USB buttons are unlit.

Windows Control Panel shows thw wieless net work connection map as

PC===========Billion Router_____________Internet
                                  I
PC______________ Switch

== wireless; ______ and I physical, for want of better description, and as to switch that puzzles me too.

Still no luck with connecting radio,

:hmm:  Hmm . . . I am not familiar with that device (Billion 8800NL), so perhaps someone else will step in? In the meantime, I'll try to find an on-line copy of the user's manual and see what's what.

Silly old ren used connection diagnostics and noticed the wifi SSID encryption count was 14, the real count 16. How I managed to input the wrong thing so may times to the radio? Trouble is it has no reveal to enable a check-back. Sorry :paperbag:

Now I can have the radio with the early morning cuppa :)
