HG622u - bootloop problem
« on: June 09, 2014, 08:06:40 PM »

Hi,

Ive had a VDSL modem/router Huawei HG622u for about 4 years now and without any problem. Today, I bought another router so I wanted to make some changes to the HG622u settings. I basically disabled wifi and changed some of the permanent IP addresses assigned by DHCP. Then, I switched everything off and, after a while, back on to see if it works. And it doesnt ...

Everything is fine except the HG622u. It basically lights the power led up when turned on/power plugged in ... after 10 seconds the DSL light indicating dsl carrier line lights up (and stays that way even when it should be blinking) and after another 30 seconds the device turns itself of and immediately off again. I disconnected all cables (except for the power cable of course :)) but the behaviour doestn change.

I wanted to hard reset it by pushing and holding the reset button in a hole on the back of the device but it doesnt work (and I had already used this button before so I know how to do it). I even tried some other stuff like first pushing reset and then powering the device but nothing changes. Just POWER LED, 10 seconds after that DSL LED, 30 seconds after that it turns off and immediately on.

When LAN cable is connected, the corresponding LED is lighting, but no change. I cannot get to the web-based GUI, I cannot ping the device. I tried both the last IP used (192.168.0.1) and the default one (10.0.0.138). I hoped that I could manage to make a fw update in the few seconds but its been a no go.

So, I believe Im going to have to buy a new VDSL modem but still, Im interested if anybody here has any ideas ...

Thanks and have a nice day! :)

Isn't the default IP address for the HG622 following a full reset 192.168.1.1 (same as the HG612)?

It could possibly be 192.168.1.254

If you are a Windows user, via a CMD.exe window you could try typing arp -a

This is what I get from my PC.
192.168.1.1 is the HG612 modem, 192.168.1.100 is the PC & 192.168.1.254 is the router:-

Interface: 192.168.1.100 --- 0xb
  Internet Address      Physical Address      Type
  192.168.1.1           5c-7d-5e-ee-cc-63     dynamic
  192.168.1.2           c0-3e-0f-0e-bc-f5     dynamic
  192.168.1.3           00-01-e6-8f-90-a1     dynamic
  192.168.1.4           00-24-2b-07-68-e6     dynamic
  192.168.1.5           00-1c-23-03-f9-4b     dynamic

Perhaps performing an nmap sweep might show something interesting?

For example --

Code: [Select]
[Duo2 ~]$ nmap 192.168.1.1-254

Starting Nmap 5.51 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2014-06-09 21:28 BST
Nmap scan report for Duo2 (192.168.1.2)
Host is up (0.0025s latency).
All 1000 scanned ports on Duo2 (192.168.1.2) are closed

Nmap scan report for AP (192.168.1.254)
Host is up (0.020s latency).
Not shown: 993 closed ports
PORT     STATE    SERVICE
21/tcp   filtered ftp
22/tcp   filtered ssh
23/tcp   open     telnet
80/tcp   open     http
443/tcp  filtered https
631/tcp  open     ipp
8081/tcp filtered blackice-icecap

Nmap done: 254 IP addresses (2 hosts up) scanned in 4.40 seconds
[Duo2 ~]$

192.168.1.2 is the address of system from which I ran the nmap command and 192.168.1.254 is the address of the Huawei HG622.

I have no idea why it would be happening but the behavior you describe usually means the the device is hitting a severe error when booting up. It then shuts down and reboots. The only way to see what is going on would be connect to the serial port on the pcb.  Something may be faulty or really odd in the config file.  You might try the reset button but I don't know whether that works during the boot up sequence.  You could try it at a few points in the cycling.

You could however try reloading the firmware and if it then boots up doing a hard reset to get back to full default settings.  You will need to use the emergency access to upload firmware, i.e obtained by powering up with the reset button held for about 10 secs.

Thank you all for your answers! :)

Ill try that tomorrow or the day after, Im having exam period which means less time then I would like.

les-70: I too think this is a problem with either HW or bad config, but as I said, resetting doesnt work (i tried pushing the button before powering it up, just after, second after, no change). And I have no idea how to load fw without the GUI - which I cant access ...

Try holding the reset button down and powering up with the reset continuously held down for at least 10 sec.    This should give an upload page on the default IP, probably 192.168.1.1.  A DHCP server won't be running so the PC NIC IP needs to be set for the same subnet e.g. 192.168.1.100.  Such an update of the firmware probably won't update the config file but it may help.   Generally no router setting on the gui should be capable of causing such a fault so the firmware update is worth a try.

Don't forget to verify the modem's power supply. In years I see many devices start to act strangely because of damaged power supply. The damages are since degraded capacitors ( thermal degradation ) to burned components from power surges.
