HELP! - I can't unlock my HG612
« on: March 17, 2014, 03:51:34 AM »

Hi all,

I bought a HG612 from eBay and I am assuming it has the latest firmware on which may mean the GUI has been removed.

I have followed the flashing instructions to the letter, directly connected the modem to my PC with a static IP address and nothing else connected into the modem. As my modem reboots after holding the reset button LAN 2 comes on for about 30 seconds and then the port shuts down completely no activity lights and no connection to the PC at all.  Whilst the port is on all I can do is ping 192.168.1.1 telnet does not work and it will not load a web interface.

Have I done something wrong or is there a way around this?

Thanks

Have you managed to complete the flashing process?
If so, which firmware image did you use?

If you haven't managed to get that far, try this:-

Close your browser.

Press the reset button fimly to ensure it is fully depressed.
Power up the modem, keeping the reset button firmly depressd for 10 to 15 seconds (in other words a long reset).

When the modem has completed booting up, then open your browser & go to 192.168.1.1

You should now see the firmware updating page.

Assuming you manage to install the updated firmware, the modem will reboot itself.

Wait for 3 minutes as it appears the modem has rebooted part way through, but it hasn't yet completed.

Exit your browser.

Open your browser again & then try 192.168.1.1 to get to the login page.

If you are using Asbokid's original unlocking firmware you should see the modem's GUI & have access to it via telnet (using the modem's LAN2 port).
However, it is likely to be remotely updated by BT within a few hours or a few days. At which time you will lose the GUI, but still have access via telnet.

Firmware versions (including BT's updates) can be obtained via this site:-

If you want to permanently reinstate the modem's GUI, one of the versions from the Experimental area should work.

Once it's all working, you should be able to connect the modem's LAN1 port to your router as normal for internet access & by connecting the modem's LAN2 port to a spare router port, you should also have access to telnet & the modem's GUI.

I haven't been able to flash it so it's still running the stock firmware.

I have tried the long reset you suggested still no luck with getting into the gui.  The LAN 2 port just shuts itself off and doesn't load anything.

If you are unable to access the Broadcom boot-loader firmware upgrade page, then it appears you have purchased a device that is defective.  :(

It works fine as a BT VDSL modem but I'm not having any luck getting into the boot loader

That is unfortunate.  :(

To date, I have not heard of anybody else being unable to access the boot-loader firmware upgrade page of an HG612. There have been the occasional problems reported, when the procedure was not precisely followed . . .  :-X

I've set my ip address to 192.168.1.100 connected an ethernet cable to LAN 2 and my laptop, held the reset button in and turned on the power and kept it held for a further 5 seconds (I have also tried 10 and 15 seconds) the modem reboots LAN 2 comes up for about 30 seconds after which the port shuts down.

Have I done something wrong?

Are you changing the IP address of the lan card or wifi card, just to be sure I turn off the wifi on  my laptop.

Ok I have sussed it out! I thought BT only used one brand of VDSL modem, turns out I have the ECI one. So clearly that has a different hacking procedure.

Easy done  if new to Openreach cpe's {tips hat for hightlight the issue}

Eci's are a completely different ball game.

There's always loads more to have a crack at- on  burakkucat's other favourite   site  ;)
