Huawei HG610 v Huawei HG612
« on: October 12, 2013, 10:45:44 PM »

I woke from my nap with a sudden thought.  ::)

Last year Asbokid sourced a batch of Huawei HG610 Home Gateway devices and was offering one in return for a donation to the Dogs' Trust. The PCB of the HG610 is the basis for the HG612, as far as I recall.

Perhaps now is the time for those experimenters amongst us (who have a service supplied over VDSL2) to use a HG610 rather than a HG612, as the former does not contain Beattie's busy-body (the BT Agent) nor her firewall rule?

Ah, i had the same idea, but for the life of me, i couldnt get the damn ui when setting the modem up the same way as hg612, plus, the connection kept freezing, the hg610 wants to use dhcp, and is aload of pooh without it, only it i can get it to work half decent is connect my pc straight to the modem, then use the router as a switch.

iirc quite a few people tried these and didnt have much luck with it & the firmware was buggy.
Stuart tried running one for a while but ended up back with his HG612.  :(

I think asbo may have been looking a compiling a new f/w version, but I guess we will have to wait until he returns from his travels to see where he's up to on that.

Agreed. Now that I've thought about it, I believe that new firmware for the HG610 was pushed back to make some time so that the (then) new Broadcom binary blob could be 'slotted into' the unlocked HG612 firmware. Then the OpenWrt package for the Lantiq powered ECI B-FOCuS /r took precedence.  :)
