dual band wireless routers
« on: September 06, 2013, 08:18:34 PM »

Quick question.

if a router has sim dual band as a feature.  and a client device has the same functionality.  and finally the router is configure to have the same ssid on both bands.

can/does the client device use both bands at once so getting extra bandwidth?

Not to my knowledge.

A concurrent dual band AP can operate on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequencies at the same time but the client device can only be one or the other.

ok the reason I ask is when I set the 5ghz ssid to its own ssid and 'unsync' it with 2.4ghz the throughput is halved to the wireless client.  This is with the same channels used, the only thing changes is it has its own ssid.  In the router if I 'sync with 2.4ghz' (as described by router) the speed is doubled.

The possibility that springs to mind is your AP may be operating with channel bonding (this takes up two of the available channels, 1 and 6 for example), doubling the amount of bandwidth available at 2.4Ghz.

Have a look in the AP to see if you have an option like "channel width" and see if it is set to auto 20/40Mhz. A lot of newer AP's have this set to auto. out of the box.
