I can assure you that's not the case from 4 year degree graduates.
Seconded.  :graduate:
I'm a mathematician, but my daughter is a Civil Engineer.
No-one on her course needed any remedial Maths or whatever, but it is one of the toughest in the country to get on and complete.
She studied for 4 years and got a First-Class Masters degree and after some years experience is a Chartered member of the Institute of Civil Engineers.
(And currently in charge of "rebuilding" the Hammersmith flyover and some other critical infrastructure that is falling apart in London)
Now she is a PROPER engineer.  :P

The standard of first-year undergraduates in maths terms is appalling. They cannot cope with Laplace or Fourier transforms and struggle with basic calculus.

A-level maths appears to be now at the same level as Higher Maths (Scottish qualification, takes a year less than A-level) or possibly a bit lower. Even with an A* pass student its quite possible they are totally unable to do certain disciplines and got the pass mark beacuse they had the option to "ignore" the bits they couldn't do. Or more likely the bits the teacher couldn't be bothered to do.

That's fine for a 4 year degree, its not for a 3 year degree where you play catch-up on what should be basic concepts in the first year.

which one would that be then BS?
The one at the dinner party doing the 'man talk' or the one educated and now 'deranged'.

I refuse to reply on the grounds of incrimination and will keep my trap firmly shut.  :-X

Being slightly more serious its probably got a fair bit to do with FTTC self-install - hell they might even have some competent "BrightSparks" by then :P

That's what I was wondering, Rizla.  It's a strange offer because there's nothing wrong with the line!
It's 1600 metres long and syncs at 19 Mbps.

cheers, a

" Now she is a PROPER engineer."

I agree, but yes you do get all sorts of people calling themselves engineers, and this isn't knocking people with manual skills. The important thing is to remeber the wise words of Oliver Cromwell := "I beseach you.... to believe that ye may be mistaken "  ie no one knows it all, in fact isn't that the point of a forum, to hear other people's ideas ?

Quote from Asbo ...... "Not even for free?!"

Ha ha, not even if they ran me a bath, jet-washed my patio and prepared me a steak dinner !! If they could 'Take out' my ex-wife, I'd have a reconsider !

I mean what work could they carry out anyway? remove the ringwire, install a filtered faceplate, change location of the router... thats bout it!  highly trained engineer?? oh well suppose I could call myself one then!

if I was asbo i would take them up on the offer just for a laugh...knowing full well you have an excellent sync you could push and push at the "engineer" to get more speed hehe - knowing that he would fail miserably...and hey if he does succeed then youve scored hehe

throw some terms at him and test his knowledge... see if he is familiar with all the facts of broadband provision and router stats hehe
