Engineer to visit, unlocked firmware installed.
« on: March 13, 2013, 11:00:34 AM »

Hi,

I have unlocked my HG612 B3 with the SP10 002 firmware ( a big thanks very much to all involved in making that possible ) and have an engineer due to visit in the morning to investigate a possible line fault. Should I be considering flashing back to stock/locked, or would a configuration reset do?

What is the likelyhood of the engineer noticing, reporting it to BT and them sending me a hefty bill?

Hi Finguz,

It would seem very unlikely that the unlocked state of the modem would become evident to the engineer.

cheers, a

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately my nerves got the better of me :baby:

I'll flash back to unlocked as he's driving away!

Well, the engineer installed an ECI version  /r and took the Huawei away, so it probably wouldn't have made any difference. I have to say the ECI seems much more stable ( connected to an ECI MSAN ), but will see how it is after the first 24 hours are up.

No more stats without lots of fiddling of course, but if the staiblity continues, I'm happy to sacrifice the stats for now  :)

Glad your line seems more stable with the ECI modem,   did he do anything else other than swap the modem out?

Lots of line checks with his JDSU which all passed with large margins, a line test with a large blue phone shaped device with a keypad which passed with flying colours, and also installed a new faceplate on the BT socket. He said there was nothing wrong with the old one, but thought he may as well do it while he was there.

He could basically find no issues so swapped the modem as I was initially supposed to have had and ECI model fitted but the contractor who did the install fitted a Huawei as it was all he had on his van. He then explained he couldn't reset my profile while onsite because he had found no fault, and I should contact my ISP to get that done.

The ISP contacted BTW/OR the next day and my profile was reset.

Now my fingers are firmly crossed that DLM leaves me alone.

A small update as requested..

My modem auto re-synced today and the downstream profile increased from 74.14 to 74.28. Now while this is only a tiny bump and isn't going to make much difference, it is interesting in that on the fourth day with the old Huawei modem the profile had dropped two or three times to 64 or 65 downstream, and downstream interleaving was on high giving me a ping of around 23 - 25.

It seems the ECI modem makes quite a difference with the ECI MSAN, unless of course the Huawei was faulty  ::)

Fingers still firmly crossed.

Absolutely they are. I always install the appropriate modem for the given vendor. There's a lot of work going on behind the scenes from Asbo, B*Cat, BE etc etc ..... trying to give a definitive as to the best modem, but as a naive 'do as your told' type of guy, I would assume the chipsets in the modems are designed to work best with the appropriate vendor ??? However, we do have some incredibly intelligent guys on here attempting to prove, or dis-prove this theory ??

Long story short, and in answer to you question, yes we still install Huwawei modems.  :)

Thank you for the update.

The first part of your sentence does tie in with the experimental observations made by Walter, Bald_Eagle1, et al. As to the second part, I doubt it.  ;)
