Tax refund scam
« on: January 02, 2012, 06:58:29 PM »

This is one I haven't seen before. It looks more or less genuine, but the link goes somewhere totally unconnected with the Inland Revenue. I've reported it to HMRC.

As you are a level headed person, Eric, I would not assume for a moment that you were taken in by that grammatical garbage.  >:(

I did say it looks "more or less" genuine. Lots of people wouldn't notice those grammatical errors.

Indeed, it can be surprising how many people fall for these things.

I was dismayed a few weeks ago to hear my elderly Dad had fallen for one of the telephone scams, whereby a caller pretends to be calling from Microsoft about a 'problem with your computer', then guides the person through the process of actually installing some malware, before demanding a ransom to remove it again.  Fortunately, although my father was taken in and tried to obey the instructions he was given, I know from experience how hard it is to guide him to do anything on a computer.  I think the scammer gave up in disgust as well, and more than likely went home with a severe headache.

Sorry for verging off topic, just trying to agree that perfectly intelligent people (which certainly includes my father, even though he has limited computing skills) can still be taken in.

I had a phone call a while back about a tax refund, and they wanted my bank account number.
I duly obliged - giving them an account number with the National Bank of Nigeria and a sort-code.
This seemed to confuse, and then another person came on the line to double-check the bank details and my name.
I used D Duck, or something similar, as the name, and at that point they hung-up on me.

Cheers,
Peter
