Ho Ho Ho Laggy Christmas
« on: December 17, 2011, 07:18:09 PM »

Hey guys me again,

Im using a new router now, D-Link (DSL-2780) and i noticed on the stats that i have 0 dbm on the downstream. Should i be concerned about is?

Nope, it just means that the DSLAM doesn't respond to queries about its stats.

The Thomson 585  does not list downstream power either where one would expect it, but it can be found in the connection event logs, timed when the router comes up.

Just a thought; could the DLInk act the same way?

You've got an extremely low attenuation, so it's quite likely that the output power would be reduced, but it's extremely unlikely that it would go as low as 0 dBm (equivalent to 1 mW). The figure is certainly just an indication that the real figure isn't available.

Excuse me for a slighly OT butt in. :) Is the power that from the exchange less loop loss attenuation , so that 20.5dBm with 47dBm attenuation tells one the actual power (ERP sort of) at exchange?

No, the router gets the figure for the transmitted power from the DSLAM or MSAN at the exchange. The power received by the router is much less.

So AAMOI,with the figs in my example could that lesser figure be calculated and used in any way?

Only to the extent that the received power would be (20.5 - 47) dBm, i.e. -26.5 dBm.

(By the way, attenuation is measured in dB, not dBm.)
