Power Point
« on: July 23, 2011, 05:22:07 PM »

My wife's laptop running windows XP has a problem opening Power Point presentations sent as email attachments, the following message is displayed.

'This file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action.

Create an association in Folder Options Control Panel.'

I've looked at Folder Options but cannot see how to make the changes, can anyone help please?

Do you have Powerpoint or Powerpoint Viewer installed.

If so :-

Right click on the Powerpoint file from the email.

In the menu that opens choose "open with"

When that opens, go the the bottom of the menu and click on "choose program"

When that opens run through the list of offered programs and highlight Powerpoint

Then (the important bit ) put a tick in the box "always use the selected program to open this type of file"

Click apply/ok

Now when you double click on the file PPS file it will open in Powerpoint.

Most likely not.

Download the viewer from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=13
(and install it)

Power Point is installed. (Opening the PPP from the desktop works fine.  It wouldn't work without Power Point Viewer would it?)

Right clicking on the attachment from in the email I only have the following options;

Print
Open
Save as
Save All

No option to 'Open with'.

I have just tried opening with from the saved attachment on the  desktop, clicked the ' always open with this programme'  But still cannot open from the email.

I have sent these Power Point Presentations to others and they have the same result, I usually advise them to save to desktop and open from there, if I could tell them how to cure the problem my street cred would increase 100%. :graduate: ;)

Ah, you didn't say that (or the rest) before, so how would we know?  ;)

And you haven't said what email client you're using............................  ::)

I've seen quite a few email clients lately that "forget" file associations and the only way to open attachments is exactly as you describe - save and open the saved copy.
Haven't found a consistent solution either.  :'(

The PP attachments open fine on my PC, but the option to 'Open With' is shown on there either, two other options are greyed out, Add & Remove.

We are both using Outlook Express.

Have you checked the security options in IE, they could be blocking.
(though they ought to stop you saving as well)
But it's more likely a Registry problem.  :(

You could try installing Live Mail and see if that works. The XP version is pretty similar to OE.
