Website connection problems
« on: September 17, 2007, 03:38:40 PM »

:( HI all 1 wierd problem here some websites connect thru the new Belkin router with no problems others simply refuse to connect at all. The Compaq laptop has been tried on other routers and connections and gives no problems. An NEC laptop has been tried on this 1st connection and also gives the same symptons so the router looks faulty or settings wrong any ideas please???

Welcome to the forum :) It could be the MTU setting - have a look at http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/tweak.htm to learn about this, and what to do about it.

Tried putting the mtu down to 1400 (as recommended by Belkin) on the router Laptop running Vista so that can't be altered i understand. still no joy. Vpi set to 8 VCI 32 as recommended by the ISP (Telefonica) really can't understand this one?

The other thing which comes to mind is a DNS problem. If your ISP has advised you of it DNS server addresses you could try entering them manually in the PC network setup.

>> Vista so that can't be altered i understand.

It can - despite Vista supposed to be self tuning I have found that it doesnt pick up the MTU correctly.

I had a problem with my Vista machine running slower than it should be and although there is something else going on with mine, I tweaked my MTU setting since vista wasnt picking up like it should that my router is set at 1430.

I started to write a tutorial a couple of weeks ago about vista and MTU but unfortunately I never got around to finishing it properly as I also wanted to talk about the RWIN.

Anyhow if it helps theres details how to change details on Vista so far here
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/vistaMTU.htm

There's also another way you can get to the cmd prompt and thats via the start > prog files listing..
that I need to also add in. (as well as finish off the rwin stuff)

ive heard a few probs with ipv6 in vista and certain routers.  also, get new firmware for router.
