Windows Update
« on: February 10, 2011, 02:41:02 PM »

I have just had m/s monthly patch updates and amongst them is KB 971029 which I think is something to do with the auto play feature.

I have not as yet installed it as it is only a recommended update. Can anyone tell me if it is really necessary to install it

According to your linky, this patch was actually issued in August 2009.

If you have been running ok without it since then....it makes you wonder if you need it now.
The update prevents virus migration from an infected usb connected device such as a camera, external hard drive by way of auto run, but as you can easily configure all such usb ports and devices to not auto-run this update may be a bit OTT.

It is also causing some problems to some users, an example at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic378574.html/page__p__2128441__hl__+kb971029__fromsearch__1#entry2128441

Perhaps it would be prudent to hold off for a while and see how other folks are affected by it.

That is one thing I did think off.

I shall indeed leave it where it is a present, will just 'hide' it for the time being.

This is a link giving more information(as posted by someone over at CA
