Creepy Crawlies
« on: August 31, 2007, 07:14:53 PM »

Can anyone id what these mammoth caterpillars are?

Theyre actually bigger than my middle finger..
probably about 4.5 inches?

There seemed to be 2 distinct different colours.
1. being a yellowy bright green.
2.  being a bit more "blueish".

Found when cutting back an apple tree.

Possibly the larva of the tiger moth, which buzz around at dusk the size of pterodactyls.

>> must have a worm

lmao

Strange that you should mention that cause I also managed to "unearth" what must have been the biggest worm Ive ever seen in my life.
I had quite an audience with the neighbourhood 3 & 4 year olds talking about worms and bugs... and "helping" me garden :)

>>> Possibly the larva of the tiger moth,

hmmm  any relation to these then?
cause not 100 % sure what these are either... but late at night kimi has also  moaned about mammoth moths.

Last year there were tons of those in my garden
Im normally swamped with butterflies but  this year things have been a bit of a wash out.

youre not kidding - just done the same thing -

although this one seems close - particularly with the mention of the blue spike and the fact they were in apple trees.
Eyed Hawk-moth  http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?id=1694

Adult moth doesnt look like the ones on the budlea though so maybe 2 different sorts?

I rather think they're hawk moth caterpillars of some variety, perhaps the privet hawk moth. They are quite lovely.

The greeny yellow ones do look like the

Eyed Hawk-moth if you look at the larva pic

.

Dunno what the other one is though.. that was more of a bluey green and although you cant see it very well if you look on the 3rd pic I posted, you may just be able to see that it had rows of bright red crimson spots near where the white stripes ended.

Here's one for you - it's about four inches long. Don't ask me to remember what it was, I took the picture at a butterfly house.
