I don't DO gardening
« on: August 22, 2007, 12:46:21 PM »

I do not garden, leave that to my wife, daughter and dog.
I have, however, just spent a couple of hours yesterday and today doing a little bit of work outdoors.

Firstly, I installed a few rolls of log edging around a certain patch of the garden.

Next, I riddled all the broken slate that was on the surface to use it elsewhere.

Finally, I tipped four large bags of decorative bark in the designated area and spread it around.

Installing, riddling, tipping and spreading is, in my book, NOT gardening, it is

That sounds very much like the set up in this house, my 'civil engineer' has to be carefully supervised to make sure he does only what he's told, no more.  I've lost too many plants in the past to his enthusiasm

does that make me a senior civil engineer? :P

Dave,  I shall now upset you by telling you that a proper Civil Engineer would have put concrete edgings in, because as your Head Gardener and Life Supeprvisor !!! ;) will no doubt tell you      those log ones will rot  ....you're not into bridges are you ?  :P    Sounds lovely though !!! 8)

Kate,
I appreciate your advice about wooden edging eventually rotting, thanks, but the three lengths that I 'installed' were new and free from the next door neighbour who was clearing her shed out and really wanted me to take them to the tip.

I think that the wood will not rot too soon and as the neighbour did not have any concrete slabs or kerbstones going free it will have to do.

Not really into bridges but I did wire up some outside lights and sockets for the water feature.
It is actually a large plastic box which I buried and laid a plastic veg tray in it to support the pebbles.
Looks OK to me. And very handy for the boss to cool her feet!

I cannot get the picture to appear any bigger, don't know why.

I can build bridges (I have plenty of practice when I'm late from the pub)  ::)

You probably chose the "Thumbnail" option.

Anyway, wood is good for all those creapy crawlies in the garden for the birds to feed on.
I know you knew that really, you just did not want to let on that you were a nature lover by heart. (Softy)

Been keeping busy then dave?

"Gardening" can be hardwork..  but just think you can now sit back with a cold beer in your hand gazing lovingly at your efforts.

British "summer" permitting  :-\

Dave you could paint something like ronseal or creosote on the logs to help preserve them a bit.

Floyd,

Painting is not exactly Civil Engineering, so not my responsibility.  :P :P

But I think I can put up with Kitz' suggestion:

Creosote isn't a good idea near plants, not to mention that it's now illegal to use it in a domestic situation. :police:

I've lived in a first floor flat for the past 12 years so it's been some time since I've done any gardening.

Hence the reason I've never even looked in the popular 'back in the garden' thread back at OP.
