2-Wire 2700HG not BT branded?
« on: May 19, 2010, 04:44:01 PM »

Digidave is selling 2-Wire 2700HG routers which appear to be generic versions, not BT branded. If they really are generic, then I would say that these are a very interesting proposition for people with long difficult lines.

Is this not copy right infringement if these are not BT branded. I do hope i don't come across any of these during my troubleshooting that haven't been supplied by BT business. Do you know if they have there own firmware locked into the router or are they using firmware version 6?

Regards

Why would that be?
2wire are a well-known manufacturer of such equipment, it's just that they're not widely used in the UK except by BT business who have modified firmware and branding.
For BT to restrict general sales would surely be of interest to the anti-competition authorities..... ;)

I've been looking more closely at the specs, and these clearly are generic. I've located the full user manual on the 2-Wire site, and there are many user options which have been removed in the BT-branded firmware. Although I have no need of yet another router, I'm very tempted to get one of these, just to explore the possibilities.

@ Eric,

Very sadly I've tried ordering the 2700HG and I've been told "1000669 2WIRE Home Portal 2700 HG Wireless ADSL modem /Router is currently out of stock".

I suspect it's true to say this is not the BT device as theirs is the VOIP version 2700 HGV. Those buying a BT version would be wise to research this site:-

http://bt2700hgv.tripod.com/031.htm

as BT can automatically upgrade their firmware at their choosing without warning if the modem is connected to a BT Wholesale service, no matter what ISP is involved.

That said, the modem seems able to sync even the most atrocious lines where other modems fail.

Kind regards,
Walter

That's a pity Walter. At a guess I would say that these were probably surplus or bankrupt stock from an ISP somewhere. The Digidave setup instructions started off by restoring the factory defaults, which wouldn't normally be needed with a brand new router.

The reason I looked was I wondered if it was Bridgewater based!!

Haven't looked recently but I've bought stuff from DigiDave in the past, no problems.

Looks like a registration "error" confusing those, probably adjacent in a drop-down list.   8)

Looks like the 2700HG-B. They appear occasionally on eBay, go for very little money, and are every bit as good as the BT HGV version. The only difference is the lack of VOIP and USB port. Two of mine are 2Wire branded and one is AT&T.

digidave looks legit', or at least a Jersey-registered company of that name does seem to exist...

https://www.jerseyfsc.org/registry/documentsearch/NameDetail.aspx?id=118040

'shame these things can't be ordered as I really want a 2-wire, but can't bring myself to trust BT to not trash a BT version with some spontaneous  firmware update just when I need it the least.
