BBC article RE BT's speed boosting FTTC announcement
« on: June 03, 2009, 11:05:26 PM »

Gentlefolk,

Yet again somebody appears to be a little too optimistic.

FTTC will be greatly appreciated by the (presumably mainly urban) 40 % of the UK that BT will eventually cover. However of that figure, only those within 2 km of their cabinets, might achieve most of the promised 20 mbps. Those on longer lines connected directly to the exchanges will also miss out on the best performance as will the remaining 60 %, many of whom will be languishing with Lord Carter's probable 2 mbps download only USO solutions.

Kind regards,
Walter

Thats nothing new and the report is a wee bit ummmm.... (cant find the right word)
must be a slow day for news at the BBC?

Primarily its about 21CN, which BT Wholesale has been slowly doing for a while and is already available at some exchanges by other ISPs - either via LLU or those IPStream ISPs who have already customers on the 21CN if its available at their exchange.

Quote

"Unlike other providers, BT is upgrading customers to 20Mb/s for free."

hmmmm...  I dont know any of the other IPstream ISPs that are charging their customers for the upgrade.  A&A isnt, Enta doesnt, Plusnet doesnt.

The trials mentioned relate to VDSL2 - again not new news..  BT Wholesale have had all these things on their agenda since their briefing in 2006 linky.

I think this news just specifically highlights that BT Retail are about to offer it to BT Broadband customers.
As mentioned though..  what is the point of the higher speeds if the consumer is going to be restricted with traffic shaping..  and caps that dont fully support the speed... where your monthly FUP/CAP allowance can be acheived in a matter of minutes.

BT Broadband marketing dept seems to be in overdrive atm doesnt it.

Wonder if other ISPs where given such prominence when they rolled this out too.   I certainly didnt see stuff like this in the general press when the others did.

/sarcasm.
