Problems with ethernet connection

Hi I've just loaded vista home basic back on to my laptop but I can't get on the internet there is a ! over the network saying I have limited connection and I haven't even connected the ethernet into the laptop yet and wireless is off. When I plug the ethernet cable into the computer and the modem nothing happen even the light on the router doesn't come on like it does with the other pc's tried all the ports and changing the cables PLEASE HELP !!! Thanx

Sorry if this is stating the obvious - but have you tried running the networking wizard?

Also check in Device Manager to see if you've actually got an ethernet device with drivers installed.
A reload often misses out drivers for significant components - typically LAN/wireless video and sound for starters.
