slow speed , close to exchange :( phoned BT but no help
« on: April 20, 2007, 07:28:16 PM »

hey

I have some problems with my internet, i am getting slow speeds on speedtest of around 1.8mbs but im on the 8mb plan.

This is my details on voyager.home

System Up Time 00:00:00:49
 ADSL Speed (DS/US) 2816/448 Kbps
 LAN IP Address 192.168.1.1
 Default Gateway 217.47.157.141
 Primary DNS Server 194.72.0.114
 Secondary DNS Server 194.74.65.69

 Firmware Version 2.21.05.08m_A2pB018c1.d16d
 Boot Loader Version 1.0.37-21.6.8
Wireless Driver Version 3.91.39.0 (Wireless is enabled)
 Wireless BSSID 00:16:E3:0C:24:7A

 Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 2816 Kbps 448 Kbps
Noise Margin 14.7 dB 25.0 dB
Line Attenuation 25.0 dB 21.0 dB
Output Power 19.1 dBm 11.9 dBm

Is there anything i can do to boost my speed. I am on the 8mb plan but getting low speeds and for those of you who play online games, i play cs:s, and my ping ingame is always high, so to reduce this i would be greatful for any help received.

Thank you very much

Hi focus, welcome to the forum.

As your downstream connection speed is only 2816 kbps your IP profile will be 2000, so your actual download speeds are not far short of the limit of the profile.

However, with an attenuation of only 25 dB you should be getting a much faster connection speed. There are all sorts of possible reasons for this, such as defective filters, line faults, poor internal wiring, serious interference sources, etc. Have a read of http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/lowSNR.htm for some hints about improving your local situation.

Probably the place to start is to disconnect any phones and connect your router directly to the master socket (best of all, the test socket inside the master socket) and reboot the router. If it connects at a significantly higher speed then you need to give attention to your wiring and filters.

Hey

Thank you for the reply.

I have already proceeded with the above steps and used the test socket, however, speed does does not change. It is the exact same. I have checked my postcode on bt wholesale webstie and it shpws i should get between 6-8mb, howver if i enter my telephone number it shows i should get atleast 1mb.

BT have refused to do anything as they say my speed s sufficient and I should be lucky to have the speed I am currently getting.

I will however, give the above steps another attempt to see if any changes do occur.

Thank You

Hi

This is a real quickie - but something looks real strange with your stats

On a 21dB line I would expect you to be getting the max 8Mb.

What I do find strange is that you have been sync'd for 49 seconds at 2816 - yet your SNR Margin is 25dB.

If you are on the default Target SNR then it should be 6dB after a reboot (although it can be higher it depends on your profile at the DLM).  However the highest is 15dB so something is weird there or there was a huge noiser spike or something at the time you connected.

Which router do you use?
Can you try a reconnect and see if you can get anything better - there is ample SNR Margin right now to give you higher speeds.

 HEC Errors 0  0
 OCD Errors 0  0
 LCD Errors 0  0
 ES Errors 0  0

I have manged to reduce noise margin down to 9.8 by using the lowest setting possible in the DMR program which did give me a boost in speed. Are there any other ways to reduce this further to the default of 6? ( However i do believe my default is 15 which i am unsure why)

Thanks for all your help so far and what a great helpful site :)

-------------------------------------------

Edit: Ok instead of posting again i thought i would just edit this one.

I just realised that the higher the noise margin the better correct? So why isit that when i reduce mine i get a faster speed. Is it not suppose to be the opposite way? hmmm. Correct me if im wrong , perhaps i misunderstood this whole noise margin concept.

Thanks again

You won't get any more upstream speed - 448 is the maximum.

Regarding the target noise margin, what must have happened is that at some stage your connection was quite unstable, and the target noise margin was automatically raised to improve the stability. The DMT tool can only control it over a limited range (+/- 6 dB relative to the value applied in the exchange), so you're not going to squeeze any more out that way.

If you're certain that your connection is stable, and the noise margin doesn't drift around by large amounts, then you can ask your ISP to get the target margin reset to 6 dB. You may have to be fairly persuasive to get them to do this, but however much you feel tempted don't lose your temper with them. :)

Your BRAS profile (or IP profile) is related to your connection speed. If you consistently connect at a higher speed than you did before then your IP profile should automatically adjust upwards after three days. There's no point in getting the ISP involved unless the profile is stuck, i.e. fails to rise after 3-4 days at the higher speed. If you continue to sync at 3904 then your profile should rise to 3000.

But, as Kitz said, your connection speed should be a lot higher than it is. If you've eliminated your local wiring etc by plugging into the test socket, then the next option is to ask the ISP to get the target margin reset.
