Strange LAN connection
« on: October 04, 2008, 12:39:03 PM »

I have desktop and laptop PCs both connected to the internet by the same router.  Recently the desktop PC will longer connect on the LAN connection although the front panel of the router shows signs of connectivity.  The laptop connects on both LAN or wirelessly as usual.
Can anyone suggest why the desktop PC no longer connects?  Thank you.

Can you PING the routers IP address ok.

Can you also type into the prompt "ipconfig /all" and see what the output is.

You appear to have a good network connection, so it ought to work. When you say that the desktop PC will no longer connect, what exactly do you mean? Can you, for example, display the router configuration screens by typing 192.168.0.1 into a browser?

It could possibly be a DNS problem. Try typing 212.58.224.131 into your browser, which should take you to the BBC home page. If it works but bbc.co.uk doesn't work, then I think it's a DNS problem.

Just the usual unavailability message on 212.58.224.131 I'm afraid.  I use Opera but have tried Firefox and IE with the same non results.  Have also tried restoring to an earlier date but nothing seems to work.  As far as I can remember no changes have been made to internet settings, it just gave up the ghost all of a sudden.

I'm running out of ideas I'm afraid. I don't use Windows myself, but it sounds as though it's got to be something to do with the Windows configuration. I don't know if a bad MTU value can cause these symptoms? Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly.

What software is on the PC -
Could well be a firewall issue or something like Norton Internet Security thats blocking it.

Do you by any chance have any usb software on that PC (such as for the Speedtouch 330) - this has been known to try and "take over" an internet connection when installing a router.

I have ZoneAlarm and Avast along with some McAfee and Spyware Terminator but they were all present when the connection was ok.  I've tried closing them all and only running with Windows firewall but still no luck.  As far as I know I don't have USB software apart from Blue Soleil.

Is that using the IP address or the domain name?

If its just with the IP address then that would normally indicate DNS problems.
If you can ping it using the domain name..  possibly something stopping your web browser/http.
If so you could try installing a different browser such as Firefox or Opera to see if they work.

So in summary:

You can view the router config pages with a browser.
You can ping IP addresses but not domain names.
You can't access websites at all, either using IP addresses or domain names.
You've tried different browsers with the same results.

Hmm... :hmm:
