PC Upgradings. :)
« on: July 21, 2008, 08:57:48 PM »

Evening everyone, I recently have decided to start re-re-upgrading my home built PC. Currently I'm on a
1.8ghz Dual Core CPU, 2gb RAM, 80gb HD, and SiS Mirage 3 Graphics  :-[ . I was pretty bored of slow gaming so now I wanted and upgrade and I was wandering if anyone could reccommend the new ATi R600 and QUad Core CPU's  ;D but I'm not sure if the R600 is out yet so I'll see.

http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/01/ati-r600-graphics-card-benchmarked-cruises-by-nvidias-geforce/

I have just read this page about the ATi R600 it uses up 230 watts of power  :-X So my electric bill will go sky high  and with the prices of fuels I think i better keep looking but the R600 does kick out 330fps on high power games  ;D

The quad core processors are generally more power hungry than the dual cores as well (if that’s a concern), although certain top-end gfx cards are generally the most power hungry out of a set of given components.

If your new GFX card and CPU will be drawing considerably more current, it’s worth making sure your power supply is up to the task. A lot of people get bent out of shape out watts, but the key factor in a machine that has a powerful cpu/gfx combo, is that’s it’s stable under heavy load (i.e. when running intensive game). Generally, this means the most important thing to check is the how many amps it can handle on the 12volt rail. This is usually written on the side of the PSU as “+12v / 33A” or something to that effect.

A good quality 500W power supply is favourable to a cheap 900W one.

A graphics card, as with any component, will only get near it’s maximum rated power requirement when it’s really being stressed, such as a new game with full HDR lighting. When idle, it won’t get close to that.

You can get the Quad Q6600 for a very sensible amount of money just now. I haven’t done much reading on the new ATI cards mind you.

Hmm only place I can find a Quad Q6600 and ATi R600 is on American site buy I don't know conversion rates and then theres the shipping fees. But I hitched up another problem, cooling on my other custom built system which im installing those items on the cooling system is poor so does anyone know anygood brands for cooling as my old cooling could barely keep it cool on long usage (3-4 days) as I do a lot of gaming and downloading.

                                                                                All Help appreciated

Q6600 is £117 on ebuyer -> http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131950

I don’t see the R600 yet though.

As for improving your system temps, cooling is a pretty generic term, which has two main headings. You can often replace the fans & heatsinks for the components that generally produce the most amount of heat; processors & graphics cards being the obvious offenders. I use a Zalman cooler on both my cpu and gfx cards. To name a few brands: Thermalright, Zalman & Scythe all make great aftermarket CPU coolers.

Then there are the case fans, which help to lower the overall ambient case temperature. This depends on whether you want a system that's quiet, or one that cools as well as possible. Check out some of the links below.

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article698-page1.html - A good source for noise & cooling related information.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/  - Good articles and reviews for all sorts of computer hardware, including coolers.

http://www.ebuyer.com/ - Well priced stuff, lots of decent stock lines.

http://www.thecoolingshop.com/ - Fairly expensive, but great for window shopping and getting ideas.

http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/ - Similar to the one above.

Good luck!

I comsidering ordering the Q660 from the link you suggested. £117 isn't to bad considering I payed £100 for a 3.0ghz AMD Dual Core CPU (from the market   :-[ )

As for the R600 forget it I found a good looking 512Mb Card supports OpenGL 2.0 and DX 10 which is better than what the SiS Mirage 3 has to offer and 128mb extra memory :)

I don't see any graphics cards called the R600, so I’ll assume you mean the R600 GPU that powers the current ATI HD2000/3000 range. If so, there are plenty of examples of those in the UK.

As for the PC World link - "support" for DX10 is one thing, but a playable frame rate in a DX10 game is quite another. If a £35 geforce graphics card was sufficient for modern games, there would be no need for the entire 8800 range. ;) The Q6600 processor would be wasted on such a card; you'd be better sticking with your current processor, or getting card to match the performance of the quad processor. Quick examples:

Seems I might have to experiment on this one  ;) I'll order the £35 Card and the one off Ebuyer and test em' till they catch fire and see who lasts longest  ;D

*EDIT* I'm joking actually I'll just compare em' to eachother but one slight problem Is the PC Casing is a handful at removing last time I had to get my big hammer.  :(

I think I just hit a hitch i cant find any PCI PCIE or AGP slots on my motherboard.

I mean I know I got 1x PCIE x16 Slot
                                1x PCIE x  1 Slot
                                2x PCI Slots Available

Can anyone shed some light on how I locate PCI and PCIE Slots ???

Here's a picture of a typical mobo with all the main parts labelled, though it has an AGP slot instead of a PCIe.

If that statement is not 'tongue-in-cheek' then I think you should pack all the items back up and flog 'em on ebay, to save you wasting any more money.

The best thing to probably do is see if you can get a diagram of your mobo layout.
If you want more info about PCI and PCI express slots, then theres a good explanation and some photo's here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express

Computing is a huge learning curve... and it never stops.  The good thing about the internet is that its a wealth of information.   I remember building my first PC many many years ago and at the time I knew very little about the internal workings.  Although I'd worked with computers for years, the very first time I ever opened a case was when CD writers first came down in price  and I wanted one, (the previous year they were around £500 - but I still paid over £200) but didnt want to pay the £50 fee for fitting it. By the end of that same year I'd built my first PC..  and also a couple more for friends.

I started out by doing simple hardware upgrades such as RAM, processor, expansion cards, disk drives, and then I experimented by taking a scrap desktop PC and rebuilding all the innards into a tower case, to build a comp for my daughter.  Before you ask, it actually worked, and that's where I learned the basics of PC building before building a machine from all new components.

I always maintain it's akin to having sex... it's just a matter of knowing what goes where.

I'll get my coat.

I think the other saying about "ahem!" works here as in "It's a bit like snow. You never know how deep it will be, or how long it will last."  :-[
