Packet Loss and High Pings :'(
« on: June 09, 2008, 09:08:43 PM »

Hi All,

For a month or so i've been getting random packet loss and high pings, while i'm gaming it will end up skipping badly, which is a serious problem (today i skipped about 20 metres, straight off a cliff, F********), lol anyways, i contacted my ISP, and they said a couple of * don't mean jack, (i sent em tracerts and ping tests, the ones in the text file attachment) so i did a pathping as they instructed, these are the results:

The reply in the email was:

"Morning,

They all perfectly fine."

Forgive me if i'm wrong but atleast 1 packet lost can cause skipping ingame?? Eitherway when it happens my internet grinds too a halt in web browsing, and gaming...pff not a chance. I can leave them at any time but i want to rule out any other possibilities.

Heres a roundup:

I'm on FastPath which is fine, i don't think it's that thats causing packetloss...but i migth be wrong.

I got a DGL 4100 router, which i use to login to my ISP Via a bridged Netgear DG834. which knocks the first IP (Me) from 1-2ms to <1ms all the time.
I switched back (netgear switch + Netgear DG834 for login) on the last 2 tests in the text file, and i still skipped ingame, maybe not as bad but it did happen....i didn't try it that long though i switched back because it seemed smoother with my DGL 4100. (Besides the ms on my IP went back up to 1-2ms)

I use Vista for Gaming so their is no firewall issues, since i don't have any on it.

I have a KillerNIC which is running perfect.

I got an ADSL Filted Faceplate (Agood one, NTE or XTE or sthing)

Netgear DG834 connected to master socket downstairs

It plays smooth when everythings working right but for no reason my packet loss just jumps for a few secs and then stops. Other times it happens for 10-20mins so i can't even web browse since it takes sooo long and pages timeout.

What i'm planning on testing is:

Getting a pure modem like the Vigor 110 (Is there any better modems like this one??? newer....i DON'T want a router, lol)

Login into ISP via PC, would this be better, than having the router do it??? if a have a plain modem like the vigor connected downstairs?

Changing to ISP Be*, are they good for gaming???, low latency, good connection?? they were recommended to me by a lag free gamer.
Or is their another better for gaming?

Currently i'm with an entanet resseller.....

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo what do you guys think??

Thanks, in advance.

To be honest, there may be something wrong with one of their carriers. There are a lot of companies out there who can host you for gaming, however you do need to look at the reviews.

In this case i would call the ISP in question and ask them to check the performance rating on the line as the packet loss should not be there. I do not personally think that it is your setup.

Hey, thanks for the reply!

They don't seem to care, 1 or 2 packets lost they don't seem to care about. I was looking into Be because of there upload speed of  upto 1Mb at £14 on the value package, way cheaper than what i'm paying now, £24 (Aquiss i'm with).
I did send them those tracerts and posted on their forums about it getting really bad, i posted pings, tracerts and pingpath as they requested.
Nothing... all i got is "They all perfectly fine.", they know the score, i mentioned it, i had to go straight to support for an answer (They never replied in the forums), it was the same guy who mods the forums...
Even though it's "aimed" at gamers they don't seem to take packet loss seriously...

I was with NTL orignally on 300k, that was one of the best connections i ever had, until they did something on there end, latency became rampant.
Changed to Sky, was better but not much..
Realised Routers firmware was really bad, got a new DG834 before i switched to Aquiss, tried it on Sky, it was like a new internet =O.
Got onto aquiss, support was superb, nice connection, got interleaving turned off. 15ms ping  ;D great!
1 Month later, this rampant packet loss started, it's fine most of the time, but when it happens, it's REALLY bad.

Ingame i've always had a slight packet loss most of the time (It flashes in the top left corner) but seems mostly fine, no skipping or anything. But when it gets really bad the "T" (Transmit I guess, the other is "R" which i take is receiving) flashes badly and i skip 20 metres.
The "R" mostly flashes, if it doesn't it's really smooth, might be a server thing mostly though, however i spoke with another guy, whose with "Be", and he gets no flashing most of the time (When i do). And seems to run smooth most of the time, as far as i can tell.....never has a bad game anyway..

The other companies for gaming, that i know of is Multiplay, another entanet reseller (i think). Personnely  "For Gamers" just seems like a advertisement to lure people in, when they are no better than anyone else....

Just did these tracerts to multiplay:

It also could be enta-related?

I presume you're aware of the Enta Central Pipe Status Page which shows you the status of Entanet's central pipes.

I don't know what traffic prioritisation they have in addition to the anti-loss tool, but I would imagine in the interim period between pipe getting full and ALT actually realising that the pipe is full and throttling things down, there could be some potentially bad packet loss, which would get better after the throttling has been applied.

I would agree, but at 4am in the morning it has happend, over the pass few days it's lasted for less than a minute, but has been known to last between 10-20mins at a time.
Today i was getting packet loss for about 30mins total, only slight, i skipped for about 10secs then it went fine, for another couple of mins. Game was VERY smooth when their was no packet loss, just accured out of the blue, i didn't carry on after the 30mins, i decided to watch TV a bit. It happend (Skipped) about 3-4 times during that 30min period.

EDIT: It didn't do it before, it was fine when i first went with them, i didn't get packet loss at all as far as i know. Never skipped ingame anyway!

As for the ping thing, whats my ISP's, IP?

Note: I would like to login directly into my internet connection via PC, rather than the router, i know their is a wizard to do it. But my OS's are cut down versions of XP and Vista, "Lite" versions you could call it, i just realised the wizards don't work, to create a new connection..... Is their anotherway?
Like doing it manually via registry or something?

Thanks In Advance

Use the router. Routers sync at higher speeds than USB modems.

To find out your IP look at one of your posts on this site and it will say it to the right.  ;)

It will look like this: 78.401.256.101

Edit: I think Chris is right by the way. I misread at first thinking it happened all the time.

Well i'll try that ping thing on my firewall free vista, since i get 100% PL.

Couldn't i connect to a ethernet modem via PC? thats what i was planning, and having my PC login... or won't it login with ethernet??? I thought it would do....
Never used USB anyway.

As for my usual PL, it never happend before, it's just started over the past month or so. It was fine beforehand.

Re: Packet Loss and High Pings :'(

>> i contacted my ISP, and they said a couple of * don't mean jack,

In a way, yes thats correct.. if some routers are busy then the icmp pings will get low priority in preference to actual data traffic.
Theres no real cause for concern if it doesnt affect the latency on the following hops and only if it slows traffic further down the line should there be a problem.

For eg using this as an example tracert:-

hop1 1ms
hop2 15ms
hop3 18ms
hop4 20ms

Then this.......
hop1 1ms
hop2 15ms
hop3 *
hop4 20ms

would be ok

and this......

hop1 1ms
hop2 15ms
hop3 50ms
hop4 20ms

would be ok.

However this....

hop1 1ms
hop2 15ms
hop3 300ms
hop4 302ms

or this...

hop1 1ms
hop2 15ms
hop3 *
hop4 300ms

would be not good  :(

I was looking into Be because of there upload speed of  upto 1Mb at £14 on the value package,

and for example to show you what I mean re non-responsive routers..  this is taken from an actual Be connection.

Code: [Select]
C:\Documents and Settings\kitz>tracert clarity.jolt.co.uk

Tracing route to clarity.jolt.co.uk [195.149.21.11]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    68 ms   101 ms    98 ms  192.168.1.254
  2     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  3     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  4    14 ms    15 ms    15 ms  213.161.72.69
  5    14 ms    23 ms    14 ms  so-0-0-0.mpr1.lhr2.uk.above.net [64.125.27.225]
  6    15 ms    15 ms    16 ms  gxn-pi-above-1000Mbps.lhr.above.net [209.249.203.138]
  7    15 ms    15 ms    16 ms  gi1-1-6.ar01.tn5.bb.gxn.net [62.72.140.142]
  8    15 ms    15 ms    15 ms  ge-0-0-0-3801.jolt-gw.cust.pipex.net [212.241.241.14]
  9    15 ms    15 ms    14 ms  clarity.jolt.co.uk [195.149.21.11]
You can see on here that my router at hop1 is de-prioritising pings..  Both of Be's servers are ignoring them..  yet look at the overall time of 14/15ms which is very good from way up in the north west.   The main thing is that the final server is still getting traffic on time.

The first set of tracerts actually looked okish..  1+2 showed some de-prioritisation at cr.ixnlon.
The third showed that Entas Centrals are getting very busy.

The WinMRT results show some packet delays on entas network.

I've not been around the past week or so, so Im not bang up to date on whats happening with Enta..  but I have seen a couple of other users comment on their latency for gaming when things get busy :/
