Are you looking to purchase a HG612?

Make sure you get the '3B' variant (clearly marked on back label) as earlier ones were prone to overheating.

Out of interest why do you particularly want an HG612 as they are starting to get a bit old now?

isn't the HG612 still the default standard for standalone modems?

It's still a good performer, but hasn't been produced for several years, so used examples are likely to be wearing out some time fairly soon. If you can find one, a Zyxel VMG1312-B10A configured in bridge mode is a good option.

Seems a waste to use that and put it in bridge mode.
Would rather use a standalone modem (regardless of make)

I have an HG612 3B already unlocked which is in good order going spare that I intend to sell on behalf of a charity I volunteer for: Hope Nature Centre (just started looking after their IT). It was sitting in a cupboard unused having been replaced by a Draytek soon after they got FTTC. I brought it home, unlocked it with the latest HW and used it myself on my line for a fortnight to check it was good.

Would you like to make an offer?

I highly recommend a Zyxel VMG1312-B10A set up in bridge (modem only) mode.
It has a much newer Broadcom chipset, the BCM63168.
It will sync higher than the HG612, with generally lower errors.

From what I can see around £20 plus postage.

much much more expensive though.
new they are around £100+
second hand still circa £50+

not paying that for what is essentially will be 1 part of what is essentially something to play with.
i'm already syncing at 76Mbps down /20Mpbs up (on a fritzbox) so probably not much left to eek out of the line anyway.

I got mine for around £40 new delivered.
I sourced 1 new about 3 weeks ago for a relative for £44.99.

They no longer make that model so it will likely become harder to source and probably more expensive.

In the past month 2 new ones have gone for under £30 delivered on ebay. Many more used ones for between £20-£25.
