Kent.
« on: April 05, 2018, 03:33:25 PM »

Soon we are going on the train to see our Daughter who lives and works in south-Kent for three days, We will be stopping on Hythe seafront.
She will take us for day trips out in her car and said she would like to explore from Whitstable along the cost to Deal (and just inland).
Is there any recommendations for nice places to go and see , any nice walks, also any good 'English' Restaurants / Pubs etc.
We have done along the south coast area last year.

Walks that come to mind.

First although it's at Folkstone, and depends how energetic you all feel, you can do a circular walk, there are several places you can park/start. There's parking along Wear Bay Rd, parking at the Battle of Britain Memorial or along Old Dover Rd.

You can start wherever you decide to park, but basically the route takes you down a lot of steps down the cliff from the Clifftop Cafe, then you walk through the woods and cross the railway line, then back along towards Folkstone and the camp site, then there is a pathway by the Martello Tower that takes you back up towards the Battle of Britain memorial then back to the Clifftop Cafe. Been a few years since we walked it, so can't remember how long it takes, but on a nice day it is lovely walk. As children we spent many a happy holiday on the camp site on the Warren, and the surrounding area made a great place to play.

There's the Clifftop cafe, The Valiant Sailor and I believe a cafe at the camp site (or Little Switzerland) with great views. Actually I think that last photo is in the wrong place on Google Maps, it's actually taken from Little Switzerland

Dover, well you've got Dover castle, which is worth a visit with the wartime tunnels as well, also Langdon Cliffs, which is now National Trust, parking available at both. Langdon Cliffs is directly above Dover docks, so is interesting to see what's going on below whilst having some great walks. You can walk all the way to St Margarets bay which has a nice pub by all accounts - The Coastguard

Sandwich is quite a nice place to visit, with plenty of walks around the town and surrounding area, plenty of pubs as well. https://goo.gl/maps/qofpTDXzZHs

Ramsgate, you've got the royal harbour which is nice to walk around, with plenty of restaurants and pubs etc. The Ramsgate tunnels is an interesting place to visit.

Broadstairs, with it's harbour and many pubs/restaurants. You can walk from Broadstairs along the promenade to Dumpton Gap and then back along the cliff top, or the other direction along to Stone Bay up the steps and back along the cliff top.

At Manston you've got the Spitfire & Hurricane Museum, along witht he RAF Manston History Museum, both are very intersting and get great reviews on Google. In Manston village you've got the Jolly Farmer, which serves great food.

On a nice day with no wind the walk between Minnis Bay and Reculver (where they tested the bouncing bombs) or vice versa can be very nice, if it's windy you'll know and it's usually when you turn around and start walking back! There always used to be a cafe at Reculver, and there's a nice pub at Minis Bay Also over that area is Quex House, gardens and restaurant which is supposed to be good.

Herne Bay and Whitstable are also nice places to visit.

Inland you've got Canterbury with the Cathedral, river trips or nice walks along the river from the Westgate towers through Westgate gardens. Nearby you've got Fordwich, The George & Dragon pub which is nice and you can walk along the river Stour.

Hopefully that's given you some idea's, please report back how you get on.
