ZyXEL USG40 + new FTTH/P configuration problem
« on: April 03, 2018, 09:00:17 AM »

Hi folks,

Our office in Poland has had a new fibre line installed by Orange Polska, it is FTTH.

They have supplied: -

Huawei EchoLife HG8010H ONT
ZyXEL VMG8924-AC

Our current LAN is managed by a ZyXEL USG40 firewall which we need to keep using for DHCP server/VLANs/VPNs etc.

It appears that the VMG has custom firmware from Orange that has hidden most of the WAN settings (for example there is no bridge mode).

What is the fastest configuration to get us back online using the new fibre line and the USG?

If we just connect the ethernet port on the ONT to the WAN port on the USG, what configuration does our WAN profile need in the USG barring the obvious ISP username/password?

Do we need to tell the USG which WAN protocol is in use?

Hello berties86. Welcome to the Kitz forum.  :)

The Huawei HG8010H ONT is described as "an intelligent bridging type ONT", so I would expect it to be used in conjunction with a separate router. Hence the reason why you have also been provided with the ZyXEL VMG8924-AC.

I am unfamiliar with the ZyXEL USG40 but if it is capable of providing the service credentials and acting as a PPP end-point then you might be able to directly connect the USG40 to the HG8010H. In that case, you could have a "two box" solution --

Fibre from OLT <-----> HG8010H ONT <-----> USG40 <----- LAN

If the USG40 is not able to be configured to act as the PPP end-point then you will have to use a "three box" solution --

Fibre from OLT <-----> HG8010H ONT <-----> VMG8924-AC <-----> USG40 <----- LAN.

Thanks burakkucat, that's the approach I settled on too.

Trouble is that Orange Polska have removed the WAN settings page from their router and will not issue us our broadband username/password to create a profile/object on the UMG.

Trouble is that Orange Polska . . . will not issue us our broadband username/password . . .

Ah, that is unfortunate. :(

However if you were to monitor the Ethernet link between the HG8010H and the VMG8924-AC, with Wireshark, you could capture the CHAP challenge & response. That would directly show the "username" part of the credentials. Then with the use of Hashcat it would be possible to recover the plaintext "secret" part of the credentials.

Please take a look at this five page thread, dating from last summer, when psychopomp1 was in a similar situation with regards to his authentication credentials.  ;)
