Worse Sync Speed with VMG1312-B10D vs HG612
« on: March 09, 2018, 04:26:05 PM »

I purchased a Zyxel VMG1312-B10D modem router a few weeks ago with a view to retiring the HG612. As I had some time today I decided to set it up. To my surprise the sync speed was over 7.5mbps slower than the HG612.

My sync attainable and actual of the Zyxel was 43,912/32,299, while the HG612 43,912/39,973.

So I turned it off, after waiting the obligatory 30 minutes, reconnected the HG612 and the original sync speed was restored.

Has anyone else had far worse sync speeds with the Zyxel devices? On the forum I've seen that generally people have had similar if not better sync speeds with these newer modems. So at the moment the HG612 isn't being retired and the Zyxel will be going on eBay!

With the Zyxels it is the B10A models that are usually better either better speeds and/or generate fewer errors.  Everyones line is different but I would not give up my 8324 B10A for anything else.

I would not even connect a B10D to my line for a second as I suspect it would have a lot lower sync speeds and the error rate would be going bonkers causing the sync to go even lower.

I find on my eci line zyxel' s just don't hold snr on the ds or sync. have tried 8324's, 8924's and 3925. Best performer is the billion 8800nl v1 i n bridge mode. my line is being mashed by xtalk yet the billion has held on to my 70mb sync even though the snr is at 4.3. and lower attainable. great little modem

I've tried several routers now and always go back to the 8800nl v1. Nothing can beat its speed lol

I'm not surprised to see the VMG1312-B10D sync so low. It has 1 of the budget Broadcom chipsets.

The VMG1312-B10A has the excellent BCM 63168 chipset also found in the 8324/8924 and syncs higher on my line than any other modem. It also syncs higher than my 8924.

It is different for everyone as each line has particular quirks eg I am on an eci DSLAM also but my Zyxel is great compared to the hg612/eci modem.  If you are going to try a Zyxel stick with B10A variants though.

I was surprised at the slower sync. I know the D variant isn’t as good as the chipset in the A, but it’s still newer than the chipset in the HG612.

I’ve got a VMG8324, but it’s quite a large device, and even wall mounted isn’t particularly flush with the wall. If memory serves, sync was similar to the HG612.

So I was looking for something more compact to wall mount.

Have you compared the error rates and run speed tests to compare the actual throughput? It could be that the HG612 sync is higher than it should be and giving more errors, so the difference in practice may not be that great.

Then the VMG1312-B10A is perfect.
It is basically identical in style/shape/size to the HG612, only in black. Mine is situated right next to my master socket with a very short 50cm patch cable.

I don't know if it has been fixed (or if this is a concern to you) but there were some issues with IPv6 on the B10A.

Not in Bridge mode, I believe.

Was happy with VMG8924-B10A for 6 months until XdB hit my circuit it then started to do random retrains for no reason that I could see, Billion 8800NL R1 is now my choice same sync lower ES counts and 28 days without a retrain  :hmm:

Nice to know if eci cabs ever get 3db I may need to try yo find a 8800nl r1.  I have got used to the combined modem and router though so clearly I need to do some research if this does happen.

Can you give a few more details about your line JamesK? Cab type, G.INP DS & US, vectoring, SNRM target?

I have had: HG612, HH5a (lantiq), VMG1312-B10A and VMG8324-B10A on a Huawei cab with all these things enabled and the Zyxels synced at the best speeds by far.

Are your contacts clean? Careful application of meths on a cotton bud to all gold bits in the chain its a worthwhile endeavour, as is purchasing or making a twisted RJ11 cable thats as short as possible.

I know people have said that everyones line is different, but to go from a HG612 to even the budget new BCM chipset in the B10D and get a decrease in sync is beyond weird.

All my stats for the line are on MDWS as JamesK. ECI cabinet, about 900ish metres from the cabinet.
Service feed enters the property adjacent to the kitchen, where there is an NTE5c. No extensions connected anywhere, and no phone connected either. A 1 metre CAT 5e cable runs direct to the HG612.
