FTTC Line Errors
« on: March 06, 2018, 08:35:29 AM »

Hi, New to the forum and need some advice please.

I am currently with Zen with FTTC service and having some issues.
Current equipment
Draytek Vigor 130 (Bridge Mode)
Unifi USG Router
Unifi Switch
Unifi AP's

The problem I am having is that interleaving has been applied to my line, this is probably due to me changing the equipment over and restarting things over and over (which I know I should not do).
Anyway Zen are happy to remove this but have been monitoring the line with a smoke ping.  The line showed fine for a couple of days (I did not touch anything).  Then at 3am (no one using the network) for about 7 hours the line reported errors but with no packet loss.

They said it could be my modem so I have factory reset and applied the relevant firmware.  Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?
I know its a long shot but hopefully I can at least get on the right path to finding out.

Welcome to the Kitz forum.  :)

I'm sorry to read of your current problem but there is really very little that we could suggest. You mention "errors but with no packet loss". Are you able to describe the type of errors? CRC, HEC, FEC or ?

With the Draytek Vigor 130, those with experience of the device tend to be very polarised into one of two distinct groups . . . the ayes and the nays. We do have a few regular members in the "ayes" category; perhaps one of them may be able to make a few suggestions.

I will need to speak to Zen to find out what the errors are.  If I was to change the modem, what would you recommend?  but not the BT modem please lol

One out of the ZyXEL range of devices, perhaps a VMG1312-B10A.

Thanks,

I do have a couple of the openreach modems in the attic so I could use one of them.  Thinking about it, I know the are 10/100 speed but im only on about 30mb speed so it will never max out.  Am i thinking along the right line?

The HG612 has 100Mbit LAN ports. Even those who sync at the full rate (80/20) don't suffer from a bottleneck at the LAN.

I have just switched over my Draytek for the Openreach ECI model and my cabinet is also ECI, is the Huawei model any better?  i see lots of talk about it.

For me, I found that the Hauwei HG612 was a better performer that either of the two variations of the ECI B-FOCuS device.

The best thing to do is check both models on your line. When I first had FTTC installed in 2012, the ECI modem was far more stable and achieved a far better sync speed, around 3mbps (on a 42mbps line) if I remember. I left it in place for 2 years. I then decided to re-try the HG612, and to my surprise I found that it was now syncing around 1mbps higher than the ECI. Not a huge increase, but you also have the benefit of being able to access line statistics on the HG612. So I stuck with it.

My guess is that cabinet and/or modem firmware updates could've made a difference to the sync speed.
